      We're finally on vacation!

Well, technically, I've been on vacation since Tuesday. But I was taking that time to work on the next RT Song. Trying a few new things, and reworking a few others. This one is taking some finessing, but it'll be superb when it's finally done.

After spending the majority of Thursday prepping for the drive to my parents' place, we finally hit the road at 6:30 pm. We arrived (after some stressful night time driving) safely at 1:30 am. By the time everyone was settled away, it was 2:15 am. And I was exhausted.

Had an unusual number of vehicles blast me with their highbeams, last night too. I equipped my Jeep with LED headlights, this past Spring and I guess some folks found my lowbeams a bit bright. Some of them just gave a quick flick. But some decided to just rail me. Those fucks got blasted back. And, I guaranty that they instantly regretted their actions. Moral of the story? Don't fuck with me and my LEDs.

Day 2 saw us taking care of a few things before hitting the road again, mid afternoon. Less stressful, with the exception that we had a ferry to catch, and a couple of our appointments went a bit long. All of my planned buffer time evaporated. We made it to the ferry with mere minutes to spare.... mostly because I broke several (*cough cough* all) speed limits between my hometown and dockside.

But, we're finally at my wife's parents' place. We're here for the next week, with a wedding to attend (our niece). And, given how I've only managed four hours of sleep, last night, I'm seriously hoping for lots of naps. Time to recuperate.

Now that I mention it, it may only be 10:30 pm.... But I'm thinking that I'll be in bed within the next 15 minutes. I damn well earned it after all of that driving. G'night...!

Here in Newfoundland, it's Memorial Day, memorializing the Battle of the Somme. Specifically, the battle at Beaumont Hansel, where virtually the entire Newfoundland Regiment was wiped out. A very dark day in our history.

But once we're done paying our respects of those lost, it's time to celebrate our country's confederation. It's Canada Day. And it's the 150th anniversary! Despite less than perfect weather in many places, the festivities went ahead with gusto.

We did our traditional beachside BBQ, with my brother-in-law's family. Sadly, another tradition didn't happen: this was the first Canada Day since buying the Wrangler that we didn't go roofless. It just wasn't warm enough. No bigs... The day was still fun regardless.

So Happy Canada Day to all the other Canadians here on RT. Hopefully you all had a grand time, too...!

Quick bit of background (some of you already know this) - I play touch football on most Sunday mornings that the weather allows. Nice and casual. Just a bunch of guys getting out of the house and having a friendly game. And, for the most part, I thoroughly enjoy it. However....

In the year and a half that I've been playing, I have injured myself more times than I have in the previous 10 or 11 years of cycling. Mostly pulled muscles. But occasionally something more serious happens. Last fall, I cracked a rib after wiping out on the wet field. Previous to That, I had a small tear in a small muscle in my left calf that took me out of action for several weeks.

Now, I think I may have done something that may see me bow out of these gatherings... I think I may have another (very mild) concussion.

I've had 3 concussions previous to this. Two mild and one moderate. But all three sucked, nonetheless. Oddly enough, all work related. Who knew studio engineer was such a high risk profession.

But on Sunday, there was an unfortunate, completely accidental and unintentional collision between my left temple and the knee of one of my buddies. Good solid smack, though. And initially, I didn't think that it was at all serious and continued playing.

      Now, I'm not so sure.

I've had a very slight but persistent headache since then. There's been a bit of spacey-ness, with slight temporary imbalance. No hint of nausea, though which is a good sign. It's been just a fraction of the symptoms I remember from the mild ones previously suffered, yet not as severe.

Still, it's enough to give me pause that maybe my Sunday mornings should be spent on the bike. Which is a shame because I really do enjoy the camaraderie that football has given.

    • Mini Update, of sorts

      grenou

Been buried under a mound of office website updates, lately. I feel the burning urge to come up for air and get everyone up to speed.

      - So, everyone already knows about the AH Rap Throwdown going live. Already posted about that. Just waiting to see when the download links go live.

      - Finished mixing a 4-song EP for a local punk/folk group called Search Party. Pleased with how it all turned out, despite some technical issues with it that made completing it a bit more of a challenge than usual. Go show 'em some love. Being a new band on the scene, they'd greatly appreciate it, I'm sure.

      - Attended the CD launch for Ryan's Fancy: What a Time Volume 2, on Tuesday evening. This is something I did through my office that I'm really pleased with. As soon as I find online links for it, I'll post it here (SingSong's website has yet to be updated).

      - Work is stampeding on a new RT tune that Jeremy teased us to be working on during a recent Off Topic Podcast. The music is at the point now where I'll need the finished vocals done before I can proceed with any further tasty bits. Under no circumstances do I want to walk all over the potential vocal track before I know precisely what it's doing.... Cardinal musical sin, right there. I do have a couple of ideas I want to try. But I need that vocal in place before I do. I know Jeremy is working on the lyrics (as I've already been treated to a partial early draft - hold on to your genitals, folks..! XD)

      - Yes, there is actually a 1551 song in the works, as well. It has been for a long time, but got temporarily shelved to work on the AH Rap, and now the new RT tune. The music is all in place. But, given how much has been on J's plate, getting vocals for it has been justifiably low on the priority totem pole. The interest has been there - just not the time/energy to execute it properly. It's shaping up to be the heaviest 1551 tune, to date. So that has us both pretty chuffed about working on it. As soon as we get the chance to finish it off properly, we'll be getting it out.

TL;DR version - Things are going well, despite a minor health scare, or two. New stuff out as well as more new stuff in the pipeline.

      Cheers!

    • NOT a detached retina!!!

      grenou

Some of you may have seen my journal that I posted late Saturday night regarding some really freaky and possibly serious medical issue with my left eye. So freaky, in fact, that it necessitated a visit to the ER.

Well, my follow-up appointment with the specialist was yesterday afternoon. It was NOT a partially torn retina, as what was originally feared by both myself, and the original ER doc that saw me on Saturday. It was something that I had never heard of before - a "silent migraine aura".

      Confused? Join the club.

Basically, the visual distortions and pressure I experienced were the telltale hallmarks of this silent migraine. Basically, a migraine without the searing pain in the temples that is synonymous with what everyone expects from such an event. Like I said - I had no idea such a thing existed prior to 4:30 pm, yesterday afternoon.

Don't get me wrong. I'm relieved that I'm not either prepping for emergency retinal laser repair surgery, or already recovering from it, depending on how bad it could've been. I am a bit perplexed with what I did experience. I'm someone who rarely gets a headache, let alone experiences migraine... silent or the regular kind. Good thing I'm getting scheduled for a follow-up appointment with another specialist in 3 or 4 weeks that might be able to get me some answers.

Either way, unless it happens again before that specialist appointment, I'm cleared to resume my life as if it were "normal". So, I think I shall do exactly that. At least if it happens again, I'll know what's going on, this time. Versus the 24 hours of "WTF is happening to me"  went through Saturday into Sunday.

    • Well, I've had better days...

      grenou

My Saturday started out routine enough. Woke up when Little Fella did (7:30-ish). Had breakfast, went to a birthday party at around 11.

Came home, he went for a nap. Both my wife and I ended up having brief cat naps in the living room. Yada yada yada.

After he woke up at 4-ish, we sat up and watched a bit of tv while waiting to go to his uncle's house for supper. Then, I started to notice something odd....

In my left eye, a vertical, crescent-shaped "distortion" started to develop. Barely noticeable, at first. But it quickly started to grow in size.

This caused me enough alarm that I brought it to my wife's attention, and we got everyone ready to head to the ER. Once there, I was seen by the ER doctor fairly quickly. She suspects a partially detached retina (which is what we suspected as well. Hence the trip to the ER.), but she couldn't confirm it 100%, as A) she wasn't a specialist and, B) the equipment she need to assess me fully was out of commission.

      Fuck.

So, I have to head back to the hospital at 4 pm tomorrow to see the specialist with access to the right gear to diagnose me.

As of right now, I don't have a confirmed diagnosis. And, I'm still having some minor vision issues and some pressure behind my left eye. I'm not permitted to do anything remotely strenuous. No night driving. And no sudden head movements.

Hopefully, I can relax enough to get some sleep tonight. I'm a bit anxious at the moment, to be honest. I'll post any updates as I get them, tomorrow. And thank you to all the well wishes I've already received. They've been greatly appreciated.

    • Not gonna lie, I'm pretty stoked about this.

So, as Jeremy promised in the most recent AHWU, Monday saw the release of the AH Rap Battle

      Finally...!

And, as much as I would've loved for it to have gotten a full-on music video treatment (which hasn't been unequivocally ruled out, yet), the reality is that time and resources were major factors working against that goal. And ultimately, it doesn't seem to be affecting people's thirst for it. As of this journal, it's been viewed on Youtube over 355K times, and Jeebus knows how many here on the AH site. And reaction has been overwhelmingly positive. If you've already had a chance to check it out, thank-you very much! It is greatly appreciated.

I'm ridiculously proud of how it turned out, and of everyone who had a part in it. MASSIVE props to Jeremy for masterminding this. And to each of the Main Six for bringing their "A game" when tackling something that I'm fairly certain none of them were terribly comfortable with doing, initially. Huge shout out to Chris Kokkinos for doing a fantastic job recording the vocals.

For now, I'm just basking in a bit of afterglow, from all of this. It's a thrill for me to finally be able to share this with the world.

And, if any of you reading this are interested, yes - work has begun on the next RT track. This one will be a departure of sorts from the AH Rap. That's about all that I can divulge, at this point. Except to add, that it will be full of "face-melty" goodness.

      Cheers, all!

I awoke this morning to the news that Chris Cornell passed away at the far-too-young age of 52. The first time I heard Soundgarden's music was on MuchMusic, when they played a then-brand new song called "Jesus Christ Pose". It's relentlessness and tenacity grabbed me by the face and never let go.

      I was hooked.

In the years to follow, we were treated to many, many more masterpieces, including the collaboration Temple of the Dog. Then came Superunknown and Soundgarden's (as well as Chris') place in music history was cemented.

I won't dig through every little nuance of how SG's (and later Chris' solo career, and Audioslave's)  music shaped my musical influence. Frankly, I don't truly know if I could explain it all, myself. But, there are hints of it creeping through in virtually everything I've put to tape either through the ERBoRT I partnered with Jeremy on, and later, from "T.O P." through the AH Throwdown, yet to be released. 1551 stuff is positively dripping with it... especially the newest one that is still in progress.

Not sure where I'm going with this. Stream of consciousness, trying to process this news, I guess. For now, I'm going to play as much SG and Audioslave music as I can.

      Until it stops hurting....

      Happy Community Day, urrryone!

Spring seems to FINALLY have taken a foothold, here in St. John's. All of the snow is gone. We're going to see temps in the double digits for the second day in a row (Celsius, of course). There's still a shitload of pack ice and icebergs just offshore, but that makes for great photos... which I haven't taken any of. My bad.

It's also the 15th of the month, meaning it's RT Community Day! And, for the first time in a dog's age, I have a new shirt to wear on C-Day. Behold...!

      20170515_083302_zpslyjfzcga.jpg

On top of that, late last night (literally about 15 minutes before I went to bed), a little birdie (@PhoenixFilms) informed me that I'm the FU, for the day...!

      FU_zpsrhe3cgh7.jpg

Thanks to whatever deity makes that call. Much appreciated!

All in all, Not too shabby of a start to the week.

Does this mean the rest of my week is going to be shit?

    What's your happy song?

    | Asked by: Austin0434 1 year ago

There's a couple: For getting fired up, Metallica's cover of "Die Die My Darling" makes me very happy, every single time I listen.

For chilling, it's Mark Knopfler's "Shangri-La". The delivery and imagery of that song just oozes calmness and happiness. Never fails to put a smile on my face.

There's lots of songs that make me happy. But those are two that stand out.
