God damn! Been a long time since I've seen your ass around! I've been lurking all over the place though, so I'm sure I've seen you somewhere and didn't notice it.
Hey Elnea, I thought this would be worth your input because of your background in Sci-fi and with Whedon. A feminist claims that Joss Whedon is Anti-Feminism, and she does a "critical deconstruction of Firefly" to prove it. Thoughts?
The Blog.
You know, I read about half of it and lost interest... since the first arguments stemmed about the fact that Zoe calls Mal "Sir" (and he was her superior in command, duh), it is obvious she doesn't really know the series. Additionally, the thing that made Firefly so interesting (and at the time, a ripoff of Farscape in my opinion) was that all of the characters are complete and utter jerks or horribly flawed in some way. In fact, the only characters that weren't incredible jerks, as I recall, were Zoe and the pilot....Wash, I think was his name, and thus,, they were the least interesting.
So.... I think the best thing to do there is to ignore it, not leave a comment, and not link to it, because you only encourage her to think that people are reading or are being upset by that stupid tripe. I don't know how old this woman is, but good grief, look at the content of Buffy or Xena (or my personal favorite as far as female empowerment goes, Farscape), and compare that against the television programs of 30 or even 20 years ago.
And for that matter, wake up lady. I don't think someone could have posted a blog about their trips to the lesbian feminist conventions 20 years ago either. Lesbian? Feminist? Sheesh, 90 years ago we women couldn't even frickin' vote!
I get really tired of people railing about how the world is so horribly unfair and there is so much bigotry and hatred blah blah blah. Hell yes, there IS... but let's keep it in perspective. I was a victim of really serious sexual harrassment when I was in Med school.. late 80s... like... really serious... like as in... REALLY SERIOUS... like... hands on naked parts were happening and kinky sexual acts were being suggested... and I had no recourse. I went to my Dean and he told me I was young and attractive and I had to expect these things. I had a black friend from Trinidad and his dad was abducted by the Ku Klux Klan in Oklahoma. In college I had swastikas drawn all over my dorm room door with the words, "Hitler was Right" (my roommate and I were Jewish on a floor of mostly Gentiles). Nothing I could do about it, as there was nowhere on campus to complain about it. That was only 25 years ago. Hell, when I was a kid in the late 60s, women were all teachers, artists or nurses and expected to quit working when they married. The black kids had to play at different playgrounds than the white kids. Women weren't allowed in the military and the idea that a black man and a white woman would be vying for the Presidency would have been the subject of a comic skit, not national news.
And here's this lady ranting about Joss, which is her prerogative, but what bugs me is that she actually got enough notice that somehow I got a link to her.
What, are police and firefighters just supposed to push the water back?
Duh, isn't that how it works? Okay, maybe not.
And I'm actually playing through HL2 and the episodes on my 360, which doesn't have the ability to use the hard drive to make load times faster, because Microsoft is being a prick about it and not letting developers utilize the hard drive for making games. Still, I've heard complaints about people having to wait long times in the PC version, too, so I don't know what the fuck is up with that.
Yeah, I can see Hollywood losing billions of dollars easily if the strike goes on for even half as long as last time. It's crazy for them to want to hold out on their writers, who are basically the backbone of the industry. Especially considering the fact that the Screen Actors Guild and Directors Guild of America are both coming up on the time their contracts end. If the WGA is still on strike, it could bring the whole damn industry down with it until fair demands are met.
I hear what you are saying about not overdoing it.
My approach has been "I will answer all questions" but not "I will offer many suggestions" if you know what I mean.
So if he asks me a direct question I will answer it. But I don't go out of my way to point things out and explain (fill in the blank). I mean, sheesh, I'm his mom. I don't want him to be in psychotherapy forever!
