DAMN IT!! I know I'm going to get shit for this, but fuck it. What the hell, guys? I read the Song of Ice and Fire books and kept my mouth shut for YEARS. I knew Jon Snow was going to die, I knew about the red wedding, I knew about Melisandre's demon children, I knew about Tyrion murdering his dad and escaping, and I said NOTHING. For YEARS.

But now that it's flipped and the people who read the books are waiting to catch up on the show, you can't hold off on spoilers for ONE? At least give a warning of some sort!

    Sigh.... it's funny skit, regardless.

    • Triarch

They should have had a spoiler warning, but spoilers should have been expected. You're right.

  • Kabyk FIRST Member Star(s) Indication of membership status - One star is a FIRST member, two stars is Double Gold

Depends on what actually defines a "soap opera". I always thought it was about dragging out stories and recycling plots to keep the show going because they have to air new episodes 5 times a week all year round. In that regard, GoT (and many shows with similar cliches/tropes) are not actually "soaps".

    • GinjaNinja23 FIRST Member Star(s) Indication of membership status - One star is a FIRST member, two stars is Double Gold

Outside of the last season, GoT had like maybe 2-3 hours max per season that was actually plot advancing, the rest was just basically stalling, and at the end of each season all the main stories pretty much ended up right where they started, just usually with different scenery or characters around them. I love GoT and it isn't the worst of those tv dramas for recycling and dragging out story but it definitely fits in there.

The only real difference I see is the weekly episodes divided by season vs perpetual daily episodes and most dramas have an eventual endgame, however long they have to drag it out to get there whereas soaps just kinda drag on with no ending.

    • Kabyk FIRST Member Star(s) Indication of membership status - One star is a FIRST member, two stars is Double Gold

@GinjaNinja23 I get it, but my point was that the story tropes used in soaps were not invented or created by soap operas and when you start looking at individual cases, where do you draw the line between a normal "drama" and a "soap"? Incest, betrayal, and secret affairs existed long before soaps did, so it's rather pointless to not look at the bigger picture instead. In this perspective, a normal drama usually drags stories out for tension or timing purposes (to line up with other plot reveals); whereas the soap does it in cycles ad naseum because they're not allowed to end.

I get that the actual implementation and literal expression of the tropes may borrow from each other, so you have dramas that look like soaps and vice versa, but at the end of the day you have to look at the whole thing. Buffy the Vampire Slayer was most definitely part-soap in its effort to continue to air and resorted to "tried and true" plotlines and character arcs from soaps to further this goal. GoT in particular started slowing down in later seasons in an attempt to allow the books will catch up, which of course they didn't.

    • Broreale FIRST Member Star(s) Indication of membership status - One star is a FIRST member, two stars is Double Gold

Soap operas are defined by melodrama and overly convoluted plot lines. They can actually be good, because the criteria of a soap opera doesn't include "has to be a bad show" or "I don't like it."

Game of Thrones is obviously melodramatic, and the plot gets needlessly convoluted in order to keep things static so the show's writers don't have to advance too far beyond the books. Which, let's be honest, is a good thing because their writing is pretty bad (just a pointless effort because GRRM will never ever finish Winds of Winter). I'm not going to stick up for GoT because it's just not the same as it was in the first book/first season. I'd even argue that the first season was heavy on the melodrama too, but it wasn't a soap because the plot was advancing towards a definite end. But like other soaps, GoT's threads frayed apart once the central narrative hit a stopping point, and now there's plot lines going in every which way. There's really no difference.

But what if Soap actors really are good, and just have bad scripts?

    • ninaeatworld FIRST Member Star(s) Indication of membership status - One star is a FIRST member, two stars is Double Gold

Exactly, or bad directors. Russel Crowe was a soap actor early on in his career.

    • GinjaNinja23 FIRST Member Star(s) Indication of membership status - One star is a FIRST member, two stars is Double Gold

Bad scripts, bad directors, bad actors? Really, we're talking about shows that run 10 episodes for an hour a week with millions for budget vs shows that run an hour daily for in some cases 360 days a year with basically pocket change for budget. you're not gonna get the best or be able to keep the best actors/directors/producers when you're paying essentially minimum wage and when you're producing 300+ hours of content vs 10-12 hours, who's gonna get stale sooner, regardless of what they're paid?

    • dinocubfan FIRST Member Star(s) Indication of membership status - One star is a FIRST member, two stars is Double Gold

keep in mind, a lot of the good actors you might refer to having been on soaps were just starting their careers, and were not yet good actors.

It was a one-off joke anyway.  Sure, we could talk about the bad lighting, bad score, bad directing, bad cinematography, etc, but that convolutes that joke a bit!  :P

Game of Thrones is no different than Dallas or Dynasty, they're night time melodramas, they forgo some of the most cheesy acting and plot lines for quality drama.  It's kind of like arguing that Shakepeare's works are just soap operas as well....They're perhaps melodramatic but they're a class above.

PS: Who sponsored it?  HBO Go?  The national networks?  It seems to be making fun of both sets and not really promoting anything.....Normally you sponsor something with a goal and this seems to be missing it.

    • CreepyStains FIRST Member Star(s) Indication of membership status - One star is a FIRST member, two stars is Double Gold

They also made fun of the concept of equating cheesy soap operas with Game of Thrones by making the soap opera more and more ridiculous. I don't recall a cheesy soap opera having someone stabbed to death revived by witch chance from a nurse.

Also it looks like it's sponsoring HBO Go. I mean yeah it's "making fun" of the shows, but trying to show off the ability to switch between shows quickly on what is probably their phone app.
