Totally teared up at the end of Burnie's rendition of Lindsay and Michael's wedding <3
Dreams are totally awesome, absolutely amazing tale as told by Mr Burnie Burns :)

Also, Burnie said "It makes sense because it was a book trilogy" but...Catching Fire IS the second installment of the "Hunger Games" Trilogy. Was he saying Second films in a Trilogy are weird in GENERAL or was he specifically pointing at Catching Fire? There were so many derailments in the conversation... just a bit confused.

Burnie's comments make sense, except that The Hunger Games is based on a book trilogy, and as far as I know they were always planning on completing the trilogy...
Which I guess would only say that Catching Fire is the least complete of the books, and I would agree with that.

The problem with 23 and me is the term "diagnostic". When you get a blood test (or urine or stool or sputum... Any of those) the reason why you must get your results from your doctor and not directly from the lab that does the testing (in some states this may vary- you might be able to access your own results) is because you need a doctor to interpret the results. Even if the lab knows the meaning, we can't say to a patient how to interpret it. If 23 and me is giving diagnostic advice based on the testing, it's not allowed. As for becoming allowed to give advice, this has to do with CLIA 88 law that requires accreditation to release results. Labs usually go through a service such as CAP (college of American pathology) to make sure they are reporting results correctly. You must do rigorous reporting of quality control, random blind samples, correlations, etc. and you also have to pay for this service, too! Another problem is FDA classifies tests as waived or non waived and specifically cannot be called "diagnostic" without disclaimers. 23 and me is not just sequencing you and handing out the sequence (a shame!). But they are telling you a yes/no huntington's disease, etc. when they are not approved to do so. Becoming an approved diagnostic laboratory is a lot of hard work- paper and bench work- which is why you can't just buy a hematology analyzer and hand out "diagnostic" results. And vice versa- you can't be an uncertified random joe running the tests and releasing results.
Next time you run into a medical technician, show them some appreciation. :)

Every American network TV show is planned for only one season (after the pilot is picked up); not just Lost. Every show should also have a "bible" that guides it throughout its run, however long or short that is, which is usually created for the pilot or right after the pilot has been picked up.

This is why every show needs to be renewed or renegotiated after each season, if it isn't cancelled during that season. Only later in a show's life will it be picked up for multiple seasons, for example, I'm pretty sure Lost was picked up for seasons 5 and 6 after season 4 because they knew the show was ending.

I have sort of an eyes half closed approach when it comes to animation problems. Looking good is always a big plus but I only really care about the narrative. Unless there's a really glaring animation bug (Did you ever notice there are 2 Jaunes in episode 12?)
You can also see Penny's silhouette in that scene. Things like that hurt my immersion more than choppy motions, or clipping issues.

I don't mind the blacked out "generic characters" as place fillers. I think it's a cool stylistic choice. Kind of like Mirror's Edge, where it's all monochrome except the one bit of color you're supposed to be looking at. (Setting aside the massive amount of extra work it would take to render that many unique models) the visual design would get really busy if every character on screen looked different. It would have put a serious strain on the cinematography as well. It's very easy to compose a shot with a limited pallet against a neutral background.

The worst part to me is the uniforms. I can't for the life of me figure out why they did that. They don't even look good, they're some bland muddy maroon color..... I'm sorry this is totally tangential but I looked up a picture of the uniforms to make sure I remembered the color correctly and I saw this That's a way better idea than what Team JNPL is right now. All the characters are really cliche but if you rule 63 'em they become a lot more interesting. (I'm sorry it's 1:30 in the morning. I shouldn't be internetting at this hour)

Anyway, all this animation stuff just comes down to personal taste in the end, and the more experience the animators have the better everything will look, but it's all for naught if the writing doesn't get better.

    • Sabasanosis

All i know is that the animation of this show is one those things that will only get better as the company grows, more animators are hired, and they all get better versed with the program.

They fixed the crappy voice problem from the trailers (and have great sound direction in general) and the digital backgrounds they commissioned for the show look great. I can believe the voices coming out most of the characters mouths (With the exception of a few... annoying ones...) and most of the joke cuts work really well. Every character looks well made and unique, which is more than i can say about most animes. And they're motions look decent for the most part. And the style feels great, i love cell shaded work when done right, and this show does it fairly well. Those are all things that the show has going for it stylistically...

The crappy flash animations take me out of it every time i see them, some times the characters look choppy when the camera comes in close. I think they can do something with the characters hands other than have them be completely and straight and open. the phasing gets annoying when up close, including their actual feet to the "floor" (That will eventually get fixed with experience and time.) Some of the soul eateresc elements kind of pull me out of it. The teachers, supposedly professionals in their field, look crappy and cliche and almost too weak to be teaching. And worst of all are the drones of blacked out characters :P I wouldn't mind it if it were just every once and a while they were walking through a crowd but the "generic" characters show up way too often and then randomly an actual drawn characters will just show up. In most animes those people all just look the same with a different hair cut with either brown of black hair. And this wouldn't as prominent a problem to me if they had not only created like five variations of the silhouette and copy and pasted the goons for the rival gang.

Aesthetically the shows at a neat draw for me, i don't love any one part of the way it looks but i also can pick out a giant problem with it either (Though the silhouette people are kinda annoying).

What's your take? Or have i summed up everything pretty well?

    • mikeyfell

Monty has said this before but he would rather have his fight scenes look good than be techenically accurate. For me that's a toss up, I like all Monty's action, so I don't hold it against him (Them... I'm sure more than one animator worked on this)

And I'm absolutely sure they cut the episodes in half to give the animators more time.
Half hour animated shows (22 minute runtimes) usually take 4 months to animate. the fact that RT can crank out 4-7 minutes a week is incredible. (Also during RTX Kathleen said that the animators' quota was 10 seconds a day and they had trouble meeting it.

    • Sabasanosis

Same thought about the weapons. I actually laughed as ruby fought because every time she swung her scythe she swung it like a sword. She used it "properly" once when she beheaded the bird. Then there where the explosives and guns... not dealing any visible damage whats so ever... And i don't think its a graphical limitation. RvB scenes have proven that they can do it.

And yeah... reach did look bad. Didn't like it when i played it didn't like looking at it too long in the series when it was part of RvB but i got that. It was his distorted memories and that at least had a decent story and sub story.

And what do you think the reason for splitting them apart was? Do you think it was that they didn't have a long enough script or do you think it was the animation team having trouble keeping up? Cause the script was lacking and i feel like i could have written it in a few weeks and the animation for the most part wasn't all that great until it got to one of the four big action scenes.

    • mikeyfell

Severed limbs and blood might have been an animation limitation, buuuuuut when you make a show about people fighting with bladed weapons, I'm not out of my mind to expect them to be sharp.

I see, Personally I didn't think every season of RVB got better. My favorites are 8, 5 and 10 in that order followed by 1, 6, 2, 7, 4, 3, 11 and 9 in that order 9 also had the same return to form problem that 11 did (Also Halo Reach looked ugly. You can hate me for saying it, but it just did) then, after 9 they made 10 which was amazing. So by that logic 12 has to be good... right?

I wasn't bothered by the cliff hangers so much (They were stupid as hell, but they didn't bother me) mostly because Miles and Kerry came right out and said that they were splitting all the episodes into 2 parts so they could release something every week. Even though none of it had any meaning... The thing that got on my nerves was every week there was a flood of "The episode is too short!" comments. How can the episodes be too short if the series has over an hour of filler in it? (RWBY is the only thing I've seen that actually gets worse when you watch it all in one sitting) .

    • Sabasanosis

Limbs coming off of people might not be the image they're going for with RWBY... but i guess they're fine with animal abuse. They don't really seem to care about ripping limbs off of the monsters :P I get they were being attacked but i feel like i'd be arrested if i walked into the Serengeti with an assault rifle and opened fire on a pack of lions.

And i guess what i meant by my last point was what the series as a whole was capable of. I'm not an emotional gut but i got teary eyed a several times throughout seasons 5- 10. Each season getting better and better then this one came along and they stepped into season 1's shoes 10 years later.

And here's hoping to season 12 cause boy am i hoping.

My biggest problem was the cliffhangers, if those keep up i'm just not going to watch until the entire season is out.

    • mikeyfell

Speaking of killing people off, the first thing that bothered me about RWBY was the lack of blood. the Red and White trailers both had blood in them and Black was against mechs so... free pass. But Yellow had people getting shot point blank and not bleeding. The fight scene in episode one should have had limbs flying off. But that's besides the point.

(I'm going to jump to your lat point about Dragonball)
I sort of think that's what they're going for with RVB 12. The audience knows what the reds and blues are capable of, but, do they? They beat the META they took down the director, they beat Wyoming and the Omega AI (in all its forms) but... do they even know how they did any of that stuff?
Now they have a bunch of people counting on them to do something that given their track record they should be able to do, but can they do it consciously?

    • Sabasanosis

You know you and i are very similar in the way we think. You picture of RWBY lined up with mine rather well. The thing that threw me through a loop was the black trailer. I had high fantasy on the mind for Red and White then mecha tanks came into the picture... but that could still make for something awesome... then... nightclub... i was lost and had no clue as to where the series was going. Then i watched the first episode and i realized that talk of soul eater on the podcast was... foreshadowing.

And god i would love if the story took risks! But again it feels like RWBY was written almost as a slice of weird life. Nothing more. One piece has killed off and fleshed out most of its cast (comparatively to the whole) in the fist 5% percent of the show. Naruto killed off some of the strongest characters in the show letting the children grow into power. Bleach, granted recently, turned into one of the bloodiest manga's I've ever read! RvB 1 killed the two main characters by the end of season 1. RWBY's still in its infancy but literally nothing happened. I don't know why the bad guy's bad or why the other bad guy's good? The school's staff seem to incompetent with the exception of like one teacher (the huntress, i forgot her name). Just you wait 4 seasons from now when the story starts the girls are going to fight and break apart (maybe with the exception of yang and ruby) and not 5 episodes after they're going to be friends again...

But the both of us seem to understand any plot we come up with is going to be better simply because WE came up with it and it pleases US.

I think i might have misstated, i did enjoy a few of the episode in RvB 11. The one's that mattered were really good. And i thought the last fight was the best non CG fight in the series. It's just that i, and a majority of the community i would assume, was hoping for a See You Off fight. A tease of what's potentially to come for the next season. One that shows off the intricacies of what they're capable of in Halo 4.

Miles is a good director! I love the shots he composes and how advanced they've gotten since last season. I just don't think he does the role of writer justice. He understands the characters but the situation was stupid and campy in my eyes. They tried to replicate the flare season 1 had and it just doesn't work once we've had a taste of what the series is capable of. I make my GT reference again. They attempted to catch the adventure of Dragonball again but it's thrown out of the window when you know what the characters are capable of!

    • mikeyfell

I've seen Soul Eater. I had to try really really hard not to constantly make the comparison.
I know what you mean about your mind exploding with possibility. After the Red White and Black trailers I had this picture of a grand epic sweeping tale in my mind. With 4 separate central plots all tangentially related. The main characters would primarily be doing their own thing, eventually they would meet because their own journeys led them to cross paths. I got all caught up in how cool it could be, and then it's a highschool story. (And not even a good one, at that)
During the run of RWBY my "head cannons" were always way more interesting then what they ended up doing.
Like for a while I thought Jaune was the bad guy, and only pretending to suck at everything...
I thought he was going to steal Weiss's Dust and then she'd be powerless.
Then Blake would take that opportunity to take her back to White Fang as a hostage, 'cause the Black Trailer had Blake robbing a Schnee Dust train. 'Cause, that would be a conflict that arouse naturally through established character traits... BUT NOOOOOOOO! Weiss and Blake make nice and everything's peaches and gravy. Well you know what: I don't like peaches and gravy! I want my stories to have some teeth!

Also... ya know, RVB. The animation in season 8 was great because it added so much visual flair to a series that had so much depth and substance at it's core but on the surface it was... well it was Halo. 90% of the shots up to season 8 were people standing around talking. and the action was always well shot, but it always ran the risk of "Looking just like Halo" so Burnie always had to play with what they were allowed to do, in order to visually distance RVB from a game of Slayer. And what's more visually distant than a balls to the wall martial arts fight scene?
Season 11 did a pretty good job using Machinima set pieces effectively. I cut season 11's pacing a lot of slack because the story up till the end was "Stand around and wait for someone to rescue us" So it's okay that most of the runtime was spent standing around and talking. Based on RWBY Miles is a bad writer (Or... maybe Kerry is fucking it up for everyone and Miles is actually awesome) but based on RVB11 it's still unclear, the pacing was slow, but isn't that appropriate for a story that's about waiting around? (I mean the seventh Harry Potter movie was the best one because it was slow. But that was appropriate given the situation. In RVB 12, if the pacing is still slow, then Miles is just a terrible writer. But if stuff actually happens in RVB 12 I'm willing to blame all the bad parts of RWBY on Kerry and sign a petition to send him back to Mordor

    • Sabasanosis

I watched you but i don't watch my feed too much, i actually only use this account to watch stuff a little early :P

And "reduced to" were the write words to explain the last year :P Everything was great up to this year! Season 10 was FUCKING FANTASTIC!

RWBY was one of those shows that i actually didn't know about for like a month until the Red trailer came to YouTube. I saw it and, again, being a writer my mind exploded with the possibilities! And everything in my had actually turned out to be better than what we were given...

Have you ever watched an Anime called Soul Eater? If you haven't no big deal. Wanna know why? Cause RWBY is almost a direct rip, from the school, to the scythe wheilding schoolgirl, to the fire gauntlets, to... most of the weapons, to the headmaster who is obviously hiding something.

The worst part. THE WORST PART about RWBY, again i'm a special circumstance (i feel like i'm advertising or something :P) because i'm a writer, is that i guess the entire plot to the season! Her being accepted to Beacon, the cliche team names, the Jaun story arc like all of it :P. I stopped watching after episode 12 because i was bored. After a few weeks i asked my friends what happened and one said, "Weiss ran away." I didn't let him finish, i just guess she was a fawn person or whatever and that it was weiss that was the problem, and that the make up. NOTHING HAPPENED. The characters introductions were the only important part, because they barely grow throughout the season. It felt like i was reading character Bios on some anime fansite.

And RvB... don't get me started on that. I'm not saying it needed CG but it did need a story. I wrote this some time ago, "A return to form isn't always a good thing. Look at Dragonball GT... sucks. Just like most of these episodes." It was a cock tease the entire way through from the hyped up end fight scene to the jokes that fell flat most of the way through.

Both series suffer from the same problem too. The cliffhangers. Not bad for shows like Naruto, One Piece, Bleach because they're 30 fucking minutes long, not 5... All of RWBY together is maybe 3 episodes :P

If this doesn't change i don't know what i'll do. It used to be i watch Roosterteeth more than Achievement Hunter, not so much like that anymore.

My hope is that in a few years my story hits and tells proper story the proper way.

    • mikeyfell

I'm glad you feel my pain.
RWBY was basically the first 2 and last 2 episodes with 2 completely circular character arcs in the middle.

The first episode ended with Torchwick getting away without accomplishing anything, and the last episode ended with Torchwick getting away without accomplishing anything.
Weiss was a bitch, then she grew a little, and then she... forgot? that she grew...
Jaune went from someone who cares enough to sneak into Beacon, but doesn't care enough to study or practice, to someone who does care enough to study and practice.

What was the point of the whole first season?
(You should read my Journals on my profile page by the way)
It hurts me deeply to see what RT has been reduced to.

I'm also torn about Miles. He's really good at inter-personal scenes. You can see some really great stuff like the scene between Weiss and Ruby in episode 10, or the scene between Carolina and Church in RVBX or Tucker and Wash's scene in RVB11.
But then there's other stuff like... Basebook... *shudder* or 5 pop culture references in one episode, or anything Yang said in RWBY. There's also his general problem with pacing.
He needs someone to keep him focused. He needs a "story writer" and he can be a "dialog writer" He also needs someone to slap him in the face every time he makes a character state the thing that just happened three times in a row (But I like to think that RWBY episode 8 was mostly Kerry's fault)

Yeah... i made a comment that's a few above yours saying that. Watching RWBY actually upsets me as a writer. It has no direction, is paced slowly and basically uses every anime stereotype and cliche in the book all several hundred of them :P Same with the majority of RvB 11. I can pick out maybe 5 or 6 episodes out of the shows that you could watch and you'd get the majority of story down. My friends all have the same complaints and it seems like the community is cut down the middle with Miles as the new writer. I'm actually hoping to made into a Roosterteeth show and i knew it's better than RWBY and the new RvB.
