Your air travel discussion made me think about all those new body imaging scanners that are being used now. Has anyone in the RT office had to go through one of those yet? What're your thoughts on them?

The question pretty much boils down to: Would you rather go through the scanner, have a stranger see your naked body and expose yourself to minor radiation, OR be molested by a security screener?

    I Got It!
she's not using a cell phone, referring to the "time traveler", she's probably using one of these
    audiphone34aM.jpg
it's a western electric model 34A "Audiophone" carbon hearing aid, introduced in 1925, 3 years before this clip was made, so thats probably what that is.

ALthough an interesting thing in this same vein is in this photo,
What+Time+Traveler+Caught+in+Museum+Phot from 1941. The clothes aren't actually out of period, but's it's just kind of interesting (he's the tall guy on the right side, incase you don't catch it right away.

Burnie's old-timey voice is fricken hilarious. Someday, there'll be a short all about it (I hope).

I used to use Flock a lot, which is a Firefox-based browser that connects a bunch of social networks. I really liked it, but I never used it for the social network stuff because I was too paranoid about connecting myself to a browser like that (Facebook, Myspace, Twitter, etc) and having someone use my laptop. It has a cool Youtube search feature at the top that lets you toggle through various video results without fully loading a page.

Another cool feature is that you can set up your home page as an amalgamation of various RSS feeds or sites you want to track so you can see all updates at a glance as the first thing that starts up your browser.

But Google Chrome's replaced Flock for me. I don't need all the bells and whistles, I just want to be able to browse quickly.

Honestly Gus, I live in Auckland and it's nothing but immigrants here. The citizenship requirements seems to of have changed on the 21 April 2010, I think you need to have permanent residence a few years longer now, however, the only other things you require is the ability to speak English and have "good character", which the only thing that disqualifies you from having good character is a prison sentence greater than 5 years haha. Some info here.

Permanent residence seems a little less straight forward. Couldn't find much information but this link seems to suggest the 'Skilled Migrant Category' is the way to go.

Either way I don't think just living here is that difficult.

So, I know the point of an earned income exclusion has been brought up in regards to tax on income earned outside the US, but the foreign tax credit is what really prevents the double taxation on Americans working abroad. The whole point of the tax on foreign income is to prevent Americans from not paying taxes by claiming to live abroad. The foreign income tax credit reduces your tax liability by what you pay to foreign governments. So if you live in a country that has a tax rate that's half of what you'd pay in the US, you would only pay the IRS 1/2 your tax liabiliy.

I think it's really funny that as soon as the 1981 electronic newspaper transfer story was mentioned because I was taking an intro to journalism class last fall and our instructor showed us that clip so I knew exactly what the video was as soon as it was mentioned here.

Just FYI, Orkut was originally launched in the US, and like most of Google's new products, it was invite-only for the first few months. Orkut invites were a mildly hot item at the time. It wasn't until later that it got big in Brazil, and as far as I know it just happened by word-of-mouth.
