At around an hour Gavin talks about "American" names and the first name he mentions is Brett(my name). I agree with him, but the irony is that "Brett" originally meant someone who is "A Native of Britain".

i wouldnt consider "its definitely different" an insult. i will agree that it was fuckin weird to wait for you to walk up to tell you that. i might say something along those lines (not meant as an insult, of course) IF we happened to be walking near each other in the parking lot, but i wouldnt go out of my way for what is basically just small talk.

When will the saying "people are more sensitive now" die omfg. People have always been offended by racist/homophobic/transphobic/etc shit it's just we now are no longer silent about it! We are so freaking tired of being silent when people throw these "jokes" at us, so now we speak the fuck up, we've always been here my dudes

They're not wrong though, it's kinda just about how you define the phrase. People, at large, now also feel sensitive to these topics as you clearly do. Where as before they wouldn't have been bothered, now they are more sensitive to how that could offend others. There have always been people who are sensitive to those topics and they may be more likely to react now, but now other strangers are more likely to share that sentiment, which would mean they are more sensitive.

in concern with military member flying: usually when people are flying between basic training to there Advanced Individual Training (usually happens in south carolina and its fairly noticeable) but other than that we are told to not fly in uniform when either on leave or transferring to a new duty station. reason being we are obviously a target. Also i personally haven't heard about us not allowing to take the 1st class seat offered to us. its happened to me once but it wasn't given up, i was recognized by a former sergeant major who struck up a conversation and convinced the desk to give me a first class flight. my favorite free thing i gotten on a plane was booze. that's how you make a soldier happy

Bill Burr makes some excellent points about jokes and offending people. The episode of The Green Room is the first example that comes to mind. Bill Burr mentions how he hated when Def Jam comedians would do generic white guy voice, but when someone did like a specific voice like someone from the South Boston, he's like I totally know that guy. This is why comedy should be viewed as an art form, despite what comedian Kyle Kinane states in one of his bits. The topic isn't offensive in rather the way it's presented. I hold the believe that it's more offensive to exclude somebody or a group. Jeff Ross ( https://youtu.be/U5AsGHdEmmk ) gives a great example of Roasting someone who's Handicapped and they loved being included in the show. Comedy should press social norms and boundaries, that's been the case for decades. Check out The History of Comedy on CNN to see examples of this.

Unfortunately I'm a couple of days late to the conversation but I think if you retroactively take down an offensive joke that wasn't made with offensive intentions, you're basically enforcing or admitting, in a way, that it had offensive intentions. It's like I'm not afraid to use super offensive bleep words in jokes because I have no offensive intention other than to make a joke 'outrageous' but context has to be important. Not making those jokes or retroactively removing those terms, to me, is like saying every time I've used the word faggot, or whatever offends you, I've been using the word in a way designed to offend.

I understand taking something down when you had those intentions or you feel differently but I think it's agreeing with the offended that you were trying to offend them and you weren't just using a word that's available.

I ride the cart when its offered but mostly because I fly standby a lot and I'm often running between gates multiple times.

With the "transvestite alley" joke, I think it's sort of a "Warner Bros. acknowledging old racism" thing. if someone brings it up, just say you wouldn't make that joke now. People just mature. I used to do the "haha I'm not racist, I hate everyone!" thing but then I wasn't in highschool anymore and grew the hell up.

Also don't care about touching a toilet seat with my ass. Like who cares.

I feel like you can make a joke about anything. Like literally anything. Comedy is subjective, and if you're going to get offended about it, people are going to be offended that you are offended. Words are words. Be afraid of actions

It's kind of an different issue when some "jokes" are made so repeatedly and in a disparaging manner that it has an actual impact on someone else's life. Those that become emboldened by transphobic jokes and harass trans people (I see it frequently), and those same trans people hear those jokes and get more and more downtrodden between the jokes and the harassment that they kill themselves (lost more than a few friends this way). Instead of "Offense is taken, not given", how about "Respect others"?

    • SgtCabooseftw FIRST Member Star(s) Indication of membership status - One star is a FIRST member, two stars is Double Gold Slayer of Teammates

@AxelDrake or just disrespect everyone equally. As long as you arent malicious about it I dont care what jokes you make or who you make them too, because if you cant take a joke, (If it is just a joke) than you have some other problems.

    • AxelDrake FIRST Member Star(s) Indication of membership status - One star is a FIRST member, two stars is Double Gold

It's the fact that there are more people than you think who have those other problems, and no matter how little malicious intent you put behind the words, it still has impact. There's all sorts of sayings throughout history that prove the power of words, such as "The pen is mightier than the sword". And disrespecting everyone equally just means you're being malicious equally. There are plenty of ways to be funny without being offensive to people, especially a marginalized group. Consideration for your fellow people is important for society's health.

@AxelDrake Over-sensitization is extremely unhealthy for a society. Those problems aren't society's problems. You have to figure out how to deal with it on your own, instead of demanding limits on everyone else

    • JacobSB FIRST Member Star(s) Indication of membership status - One star is a FIRST member, two stars is Double Gold

While yes people should be able to take a joke and people being super sensitive isnt a good thing....No that does not make it alright to just be terrible with your jokes because you think its okay. There are some thing you just shouldn't joke about and while many people can take a normal joke and even do one at the expense of themselves there is still certain topics that they are cool to joke about and doing so just because you can and they need to get over it is kinda shitty.

On another note....saying dont worry about words but actions is VERY terrible advice. Like axel said above the pen is mightier then the sword. They can be ten times more damaging and just more effective to deal with a problem.

But about your "its not society problem but yours."If someone is dealing with depression or anxiety and that is made worse by the people and society around them ridiculing them for how they act, think, dress or the lifestyles choices they make that society fault not theirs. If they then hope for something to make them laugh and entertain themselves and find RT (not saying RT has done this but if they didnt care about offending people like you said) and in their podcast or video they start making fun of gays or something and laughing at them. Then that would have profound effect on they were gay.  That not them being overly sensitive thats society driving them to the edge of a cliff nudging them to fall and when they actually do fall off saying. "not our fault you fell that was your problem you werent strong enough not to resist our constant nudging"

    • SgtCabooseftw FIRST Member Star(s) Indication of membership status - One star is a FIRST member, two stars is Double Gold Slayer of Teammates

@JacobSB If they bashed gays, and I were a gay, Id bash em back. Not get all teary eyed and weepy because society hates me, Id just swing back. Ive been to some dark places in my life, and I can tell you from experience that the ONLY permanent solution is to man up and not care. Society is nudging you? Push Society. I have no more room in my heart for people who cant just get over what someone said. Unless what the person said was a threat to you, brush it off. Free speech is a beautiful thing. Plus, some of the funniest jokes are jokes about WWII.

Oh man, Burnie would hate LA theatre reviewers. They constantly get names, dates, and locations wrong. It's a freaking epidemic. They'll say that Of Mice And Men was at The Crown theater. Nope, it's at The Belfry. The Crown is next door and now patrons are going to the wrong location and are confused, and The Belfry loses money. Sorry, small rant. But, I completely understand where Burnie is coming from with small, but annoying, things being wrong in journalism. All you have to do is a quick Google, or just look at the program you kept from the show.

As Whoopi Goldberg said about old racist Looney Tunes, "Editing them would be to pretend the racial slurs never happened." Obviously "transvestite alley" isn't nearly as bad as some of those cartoons.
