On the topic of having more creative MDB Questions, I thought of one:

Million dollars, but wherever you go must be in a boat. Even on land.

i wonder if any of them watch black mirror on netflix. it has a really interesting take on society's views on technology. i'm curious what their comments on it would be since it revolves around a lot of what they like to talk about on the podcast.

Spider-Man should be the greatest MCU film we've seen so far. Every MCU film follows a very similar checklist that the original Spider-Man did, it's those films that built the MCU, and he fits that style so well if they do it right. I do wish they'd go less jokey (like Jessica Jones but in a film) but Spider-Man needs to be a bit silly to be Spidey.

Talking about when you have expertise in something and see it poorly executed: that's me and music.

Sure, I almost never get to access suspension of disbelief, because I'm so often caught up in the reflex of writing/studying/analyzing music that I'll find myself paying less attention to the plot than to the score...but it's not inherently bad: I get to appreciate the nuance the composer incorporated which most people only feel, but don't understand

It only gets truly distracting when, for example, watching a YouTube vlog, and that very pleasant (obviously public domain) jazz piano track begins to play, and all I can think about is how "I've Never Been in Love Before" is being treated like elevator music when the lyric is so damn good...and the video ends and I was singing along in my head and I didn't listen to a single thing the vlogger said (by the way, you're welcome for the 3 views on each video that has that track, because I end up having to watch it repeatedly in order to make myself pay attention). Or, say, anything that incorporates the Verdi Requiem Dies Irae or Carmina Burana O Fortuna as default "dramatic" music--it honestly ups the humor level tenfold for most classically trained musicians, but it gets distracting when you're annoyed the chorus for Carmina is using church Latin instead of Germanic (and poorly enunciated at that).

Even so, I often wonder if other people enjoy music much more than I do, because to them it's magical; then again, I was always the kid who enjoyed magic tricks even more the second I understood how they were done.

I feel the same way about The OA as Burnie, I really don't know if I like it or not. I've seen it all, and that is honestly the best way to put it. I keep watching, but I don't know if I enjoy it. The internet shit all over it, but I suppose I enjoyed it enough to watch the series and then recommend it to others.

The only reason I don't look forward to Blaine guesting on the podcast is b/c of how often he brings up shit and piss and farts, and I thought he did rather well on the main show, it still came up but it was minimal. Than the post show happened. Goddammit Blaine. I still love the guy but goddammit.

noticing things more when you do it for a living is common across a lot of aspects of life. once i started making music and learning how to make certain sounds, it became harder to just enjoy that music any more. i was no longer hearing the sound as a whole, i was hearing the individual pieces that make it up. basically, if you do what you love for a job, then you might not love it any more. i used to love cars until i became a mechanic. now i hate ALL of them lol.

    • stephilo FIRST Member Star(s) Indication of membership status - One star is a FIRST member, two stars is Double Gold

Correct me if I'm wrong, but there is no "Best Movie" category for the Golden Globes, only best movie for drama and best movie for comedy/musical. Personally I think it makes no sense to have comedy/musical together since La La Land wasn't a comedy. However La La Land was truly incredible and it sounds like you haven't seen it (since you said 'if'), I would definitely recommend watching it!

    • hernanda3 FIRST Member Star(s) Indication of membership status - One star is a FIRST member, two stars is Double Gold Wolfbrother

But wasn't La La Land a musical? I think governing bodies that come up with the categories take themselves too serious and put anything that is not "serious" (drama) in "lower" categories that don't deserve their own classification.

    • stephilo FIRST Member Star(s) Indication of membership status - One star is a FIRST member, two stars is Double Gold

@hernanda3 yes la la land was a musical, and i totally agree! i was just saying that musicals aren't always comedic so to just group them in with the comedic category doesn't make sense. take les mis for example: that movie is depressing as fuck but it ended up competing against comedy movies just because it was a musical, which makes no sense. it's a flawed system :/

I agree with Burnie in terms of Dick jokes in RvB. I am only pointing this out because it was a joke I laughed at too hard. Tex had a line dealing with the pantsless alien. " Thats just a matter of a penis - uh Opinion I mean opinion." It was just one that I always remember.

I love behind the scenes stuff. It really enhances the experience, especially on repeat viewings. I've seen Revenge of the Sith probably 100 times (Don't judge me) and I'll be bored if I'm not picking out the real volcanic explosions and the models and matte paintings of the climax (Yes. Most of Mustafar is actually practical effects)

Spectral was such a good film in theory. Like a live action F.E.A.R is what i thought it would be, which is awesome. It had such a strong first act and it could have been amazing but everything after that one scene was just awful, redubbed lines, plot holes bigger than the Mariana trench. Again, had potential to be great, wasn't!
