The conversation about the temperature being cold made me think of something I read regarding depression. It's a fairly common thing for people to try and tell someone who is sad or depressed that there are people who are worse off in the world. Sometimes they mean it in a "grow a pair" kinda way, and sometimes they mean it in a "try to smile and be happy with what you have" kinda way. But no one says to someone who is feeling happy things like "Someone just beat cancer" or "Someone just met the love of their life" to try and lessen the happiness that the other person is feeling. I guess the point I'm trying to make is no matter what someone is feeling (cold, sad, happy, etc.) then you can't discount their feelings by providing examples of people also going through something similar that we perceive as being more severe. Everyone's emotions/opinions are valid because that person feels that way.

Not often do they talk about stuff that offends me, but this time they did it?

The whole "i don't see races/racism argument, is obnoxious" they all seem to agree with. I'm not a racist person. I see a black man, i don't think any less or different from them than i see a white man. Same with all other "races". We are all just humans. Some had different upbringings, and it's true that certain types of upbringing thrives in certain ethnic groups.

(i don't know if you're aware of the Belgian/Dutch black Pete thing) But i see a black Pete, i don't see a black slave.I see a person bringing candy to children and making them happy.

(btw historical reason why black Pete is black, is because he was a demon that punished children, it doesn't come from slavery at all. The tale we tell no is that he's black of the root from the chimneys)

I see Ellen piggy ride on a black male, i don't see it as Ellen using the black man as slave. i don't see it as insensitive towards the abuse they endured during slave times. I see humans having fun, and playing around.

I see that they cast Scarlett Johansson as "The Major", i don't see white washing. i see a good and badass actress being cast in a roll that suits her, and they needed the big name to make the film happen.

I do see racism if it's there. if someone is acting racist and saying racist stuff, i'll point it out. I hate racism, i see racism, but i don't see it in places it isn't present.

I found the discussion of feeding the world interesting, so I'd like to offer my input, because no one asked. XD

If we were to look at food production from a Free Market Economics point of view, then we would realize that the reason we are not more "humanitarian" in our food production is based on Supply and Demand. Essentially, we have become so efficient at producing food that, if production was not restricted, the amount of money that farmers can make by selling the excess supply of their goods is less than the amount of money it costs to product it. Said another way, as our ability to produce food approaches infinity, the amount of money we can charge for that food approaches 0. And as there will always be a cost to produce food, farmer's must now "artificially" limit the amount they can supply so as not to cannibalize on their own profit. Exemplified here.

Now, based on the Free Market Theories of Supply and Demand, if farmer's did not have a way of limiting supply, than they would be forced to sell their goods at a cost below production cost and would eventually produce themselves out of business. Following this logic, it would be so "cost inefficient" to be a farmer that no one would farm, leading to a famine. Now, admittedly, this is taking the argument to it's logical extreme, but hopefully you're beginning to think about why it is that we do what we do.

Now for part where I negate everything I just wrote and simultaneously annoy you. If, hypothetically, we could produce food at such a rate as to feed the world and, again hypothetically, there was a group that was willing to pay farmer's for their excess to send to needy countries, then we could simultaneously end world hunger, while also "artificially" limiting the supply of food so that farmers could be paid a livable amount for their goods, and allow the cycle to continue.

I believe this is the idea Burnie had when he brought up the "misallocation of food", because I obviously know what he's thinking at all times. XD

So just to clarify about the rock paper scissors thing...

It's not some kind of national tournament (I mean it is but it's not). It's a yearly competition held by a Japanese idol group, AKB48 (and its sister groups) where the winner of the tournament gets to release a solo song.

There are over 100 members of the group(s) who compete, and the group tends to be based on popularity (each year people can vote for their favourite girl and the 16 most popular get to participate in the singles released for the next year, save for the rock paper scissors one) so this is an opportunity for less popular girls to have a chance in the spotlight.

AKB48 is one of the biggest musical acts in Japan currently, with each of their releases selling over 1 million copies. They also perform on heaps of TV shows, do live events all the time amongst other things that come with being idols.

It's cool that the video went viral but it's not really what it's marketed as. Not that anyone probably cares, but I thought it was worth noting.

Source: Am fan of Japanese idol groups, AKB aren't that great though.

I don't know if the majority of the RT community are just a bunch of offended babies or if there's just a vocal minority that I've encountered a lot, that said this is probably going to get like -20 noob or something but if you're reading this and you aren't an offended baby leave a comment, or don't. I watch a metric fuckton of Rooster Teeth content but sometimes some of the people I encounter on this site make me feel like I'm not part of the RT community which makes me sad. I don't know where I'm going with this.

    • blameTheDog FIRST Member Star(s) Indication of membership status - One star is a FIRST member, two stars is Double Gold

I'm going to start you off with a flamebait because there appears to be a lack of self-awareness on your part. You can't just call out the community and then act hurt because you feel like you're not a part of it. There's better ways you could have initiated this conversations without lumping up everyone as "babies," and the mere fact that you have kind of tells me why you're struggling to get along with folks here. The RT community is made up of a lot of different people from different places and stages in the world. You're bound to offend someone, but you're also just as likely to find others that agree with you. So my recommendation, if that's what you were looking for, is just to change the approach. Instead of separating yourself with a statement that can be taken as an insult, try asking a question. For example: Is it just me or does Burnie have a point of people becoming too sensitive about things" or "Have you noticed people appear more thinned skinned than usual?"

This way you include yourself, not exclude yourself.

Quite frankly, I do agree that people appear to be more easily offended than usual. Could be just the vocal minority has better timing or that 2016 has crushed a lot of spirits. Then again, people could just be griefing. Hard to tell the cause these days.

I wasn't really trying to victimize myself but reading it back it does seem to appear that way, anyway thanks for the advice it really opened my eyes and I hope I can find like-minded people here on the site. Also I used "babies" because that was the least offensive thing I could think of on the spot.

Look, I live in Wisconsin its not the coldest state but it gets up to upper 90's(F) in the summer and it was -17(F) yesterday. It's not cold unless it gets below zero and even then its not that cold. People in southern states that complain about 30's(F) hate being called out on it, because they hate the idea that they're being babies. The argument that northern states citizens are used to low temperatures is false because it was like in the 50's(F) week before it.

    • Xx1ncitExX

Gus' point was, while it might be colder where you live that doesn't mean other people can't feel cold. It's not hating being called out or being a baby, it's the fact he can't say that he's cold because someone always has to get offended, one up him or become an expert on weather. Every person has a different temperature threshold. I know people who get cold in sunny weather and people who wear shorts in snow. No one cares what the temperature where you live  is, It's a personal thing not a geographical thing....

What Gus said about NASA is total crap. They couldn't send a rocket tomorrow because it takes months to organise a mission. The idea that I have seen everywhere that we have somehow forgotten how to build rockets is a joke. Sure they didn't store the plans for a Saturn 5 rocket, but Space X already has the prototypes for more efficient rockets then the Saturn 5. Nobody knows how to build Saturn 5 because it's obsolete. We don't go to the Moon because it's not cost effective. It's really that simple.

Saying that a team of engineers couldn't get together and figure out how to land on the moon now is ridiculous in the face of projects like the LHC. Anyone who believes this are in the same category as conspiracy theorists that believe nuclear war is imminent.

Agreed! The RT podcast dares to challenge the very laws of nature with both inaccurate science or hypothetical physics. They ask us the tough questions like: Why can't we just lasso the moon? How long can you hold off dying from starvation if there's a sandwich in front of you? And do rocks float in lava.

If they start censoring themselves the world would be poorer for it.

To be fair, Burnie, I think the reason why so many people are calling you out on your comments are because there's no clear distinction between your "comedic acts" and your legitimate comments (some of which are absolutely obscene and unfortunately fuels the stereotype of the ignorant and arrogant American, seen from a foreigners perspective). When you watch a Lewis C. K. show you know you're going into a stand-up act, but this podcast has always been a mix of humor, entertainment, and legitimate perspectives, which makes it harder to differentiate when you fall in which category with a comment. It's part of the entertainment and the identity of this podcast.

I think the distinction comes from the absurdity of the comment he makes, whatever comment it is, and that is what defines it as a bit of a bit, and i think he has a point when he points out that somehow, recently, more and more, that concept seems to be going over peoples head, like the stereotypical Americans are ignorant and arrogant aspects being taken as legitimate perspectives....
Well maybe from Gus they are but....

I think a lot of the cognitive dissonance comes from the fact that we as a society can no longer agree on what's absurd.
