RT Docs: Unconventional

Gus Sorola has talked on panels at some of the world's biggest conventions, met thousands of fans, and even co-founded the massive pop culture event, RTX. Now Gus wants to experience the other side - the hundreds of small, obscure, and downright bizarre conventions happening every weekend around the country. Follow him on a journey behind the scenes of obscure fandom as he tries to fit in and find the common link that unites these communities.

36:55 when Gus is on the ground like a kid.. I smiled so hard. It's awesome how invested he is in learning about all these different pop culture conventions.

The Santa Con and Lincoln Con made me feel me two very different kinds of intense social anxiety. Furry Con looked the most chill and friendly by far, even though I don't really understand it. Would be fun to see more of the odd conventions out there.

Props to the Doc team for dubbing over the suiter's voice with dog sounds. I have a roommate who is a suit maker and she tells me that generally people HATE to talk in suit because it breaks their character.

Loved this! Analogizing to RTX and the RT community at the beginning and end was a great way to make these experiences relatable to all of us watching.  It's easy to try and exclude/look down on others, but we're all just looking for our people.

Although as a New York resident, I will say that I avoid the streets on Santacon day.  It's a lotta drunk for 11am. :)

This was a really interesting documentary. I enjoyed it a lot tbh. So far the Let's Play LiveHaus of Pain, and Unconventional documentaries have been my favorites. They're seeming to cover a more interesting premise each time as well as the way they execute it. Good work  simple_smile thumbsup

I loved this doc. Although I was a little disappointed that the description mentioned thousands of conventions, but then they only showed three. Which seems like too few for a full length documentary, but as an episode in a series, that sounds just right.  wink

BTW, if you do plan on going to more conventions for future episodes, there is TFCon Toronto the weekend after RTX. Which is the world's largest Transformers convention. Or if that's too short notice, there's also TFCon USA, America's largest Transformers convention, which is in DC this year at the end of September. /endShamelessSelfPromotion

There's lots of stuff you could cover there that makes Transformers unique from similar properties. It's not all about toys and the Michael Bay movies or the original 80's cartoon and their toys for that matter. The Transformers franchise is incredibly diverse and varied. As is it's fandom. There's a wide range of aspects to explore. For example, the comics regularly tackle real world issues such as gender, sexuality, philosophy, politics, and religion.

Holy shit! Before even getting into the convention aspect of this, let's talk about the fact that Esther is actually interviewed in this. This is probably the first time I've seen her as part of an RT production since RT comics.

This really makes me appreciate RTX because it is the only convention that I've attended and entirely by myself at that, despite having IRL friends who are RT fans as well. Both years that I've been to RTX have been so much fun and I was able to just socialize with every random person that I met despite being an anti-social person in most other aspects of my life. People are just incredibly friendly at conventions like RTX where everyone has their own quirkiness tied to a shared passion.

I hate that I wasn't sure enough of my situation to be able to plan to go to RTX this year but it is my goal to attend every Austin RTX from here on out. I don't even need a week or two weeks vacation when I can get the 3 day vacation that is RTX.

My only regret about this is that he didn't go to the Mermaid convention!! They mentioned it twice!!

But seriously I love this. I always wondered how fur suiters maintained the suit so it wouldn't get "funky"

Please go to more lesser known conventions!!

Maintaining a suit is a ton of work. I use about 50% isopropyl alcohol spray with a fragrance added at conventions, and wash it in Woolite when I get home. Plus constant brushing to keep from getting matted.

should have worn a fur suit, that was the only 1 u didnt dress for. Ears, a tail, something. I just feel he didn't put in as much effort for that one. I'm sure there is a way to rent a suit, I do agree 3k or more is not worth it for a 1 time thing

My thought was while yeah it was for the doc, after the Drunk RVB reading, Burnie talked about there was a real emotional moment of how even though close in proximity, they had grown apart from each other. Maybe this is a byproduct of that and them making an effort to hang out and just be friends (and shoot B reel for an RT doc)
