I just watched a man I've never met eat pizza, and nothing else, for 17 seconds. Weird world out there.

It's surprising to me that he had to call 4-1-1 to get the number to make his order. Whenever I've ordered anything strictly online (or been there to collect) it doesn't matter what type of cuisine it is, they'll always include a menu that has their phone number on. Got loads from the same pizza place just because their pizza is fantastic and cheap.

It sounds like he's used to using a courier service to place his order with somewhere that doesn't deliver. Since he's used to ordering food from the service, he probably always uses their app/online menus and doesn't bother to keep the flyers that come with the order.

Maybe I missed it growing up or maybe it's an American thing, but what's 4-1-1?

    I thought 4-1-1 was a slang term. Like 'what's the 4-1-1' means 'what's up'.

4-1-1 is basically a info line, if you didn't know something like address of the location you wanted, you would cal 4-1-1. Than play 20 questions with a robo operator until it gets it right.

In my city in Canada we have a local 3-1-1 number for just this city. This is what the 4-1-1 number was created for, to find out anything you needed in your area, so I can see where the slag version comes from.

Huh. So it's basically like an operator?

(which is something I've never used and never seen used IRL XD)

Yep, Back in the 80s and 90s it probably would not have taken him 4 1/2 minutes because he would have been talking to an actual person, but it still probably would have been a good 2-3.

4-1-1 is an information hotline people would call. That's where the slang term comes from, as people would say in reference when they want to find information about something.

Wait, someone was looking at him talking to his cellphone. I thought they took all his technology including his cell phone? Confused!

He was talking to a video camcorder we gave him. That was the only piece of modern tech we gave Barbara and Blaine so they could record their day when the doc team wasn't around.

Couldn't Blaine have saved that phone time by simply driving over and ordering the pizza in store? It would have taken the same time to prepare and cook

You've never been there. Finding a parking space in South Congress is a bitch (Home Slice has about 10 car spaces.) The sit down wait is at a minimum 30 min, but they do have a location next door called "More Home Slice" which is just slices to go, but seeing how he wanted a whole pizza; I can promise him losing about 5 min through 411 still saved him 20+ min.

He could have saved the phone time, but he would have had to wait in the store a lot longer (with no smartphone to keep him occupied). If I order food for pick up, I'll typically call ahead, chill at home for 10-15 minutes, then by the time I actual arrive at the store my order might be ready.

One of the times that technology probably took longer than if an actual person was manning 411 like it usually was back in the 80s and early 90s.

"Blaine Calls 4-1-1 will be available to sponsors only 7 hours from now." It's right there next to the buy sponsorship box.
