Cole explains is by far my favourite thing on the RT site. Please, PLEASE do a super-cut and make this available for the public. I guarentee it would up your First count if anime fans knew this kind of quality content!

I watched the whole series of drifters and loved it. The intro I also enjoyed a lot, however I keep thinking if the people that were making the music for drifters thought it was a car "drifting" anime not a time drifting.

So I don't know if any of the RT cast will be reading this, but I'm pretty sure I know who the leader of the Octoberists just from the description from a couple episodes ago. He was described as a Japanese Merlin like figure who acted as an advisor. The first person that came to my mind would have to be Abe no Seimei, who was an Onmyo mystic,, which is basiically a mix of occult and cosmology. Seimei was around during the Heian period and was an actual advisor to the emperors during that time. Much like Rasputin, Seimei was thought to have mystic powers, which may have been due to the way applied a lot of enhanced scientific and cosmological answers to many of the problems that he was charged to solve. All of this pretty matches the description Gray explained and it would make a lot of sense.

Oh, this is nasty. I never finished Yuri or Drifters but I've been loving Cole Explains, and they had to stick it in between talking about the Yuri and Drifters finales!

This is... ehck. Pray I don't hear anything as I try to navigate to Cole Explains. Doesn't help that they probably leave up the spoiler tag through the entire thing. :P

Cole does a horrible job of explaining Keijo. But Miles reaction to it is almost as funny as the show. But seriously Keijo is probably the funniest anime I've ever watched. Because its SO serious about its parody-ness. Gate of Bootylon! Buttack on Titan! I've never been in tears laughing so much in a series.

Edit: I tried to Cole-explain this show to my anime watching cousin (who actually re-introduced me to anime) at christmas, and even he was shaking his head at me. And the non-anime watching cousin that was there probably thought I was creepy as hell.

What I loved about Drifters is that it's one of the few entertainment pieces presented to a wide audience that shows war for what it truly is. Madness. At the end, there is a victor. And from then on throughout history, that victor is the "Good Guy". But in the midst of the war, neither side is "good". They're in the right to their own people. But in reality, both sides are committing horrible atrocities. Take World War II for instance. The Allies won, so therefore, they were the good side. 'Look at all the horrible things that Hitler and the Axis powers did. Blame them. Concentration Camps, mass slaughters, subjugation, racism, invasions of countries, etc. And the Allies never stooped to that level, and still came out on top.' But in reality, the Allies did the exact same thing. But we never talk about it, because they won, so they got to write the history. America had Concentration Camps of their own, referred to as Internment Camps, sanctioned by Roosevelt, to capture and hold hundreds of thousands of Japanese Americans, where over 1,800 died. There were race riots and killings all over the country due to the bombing of Pearl Harbor. We dropped TWO Nuclear Bombs onto Japan in revenge for attacking us, causing significantly more damage and death than the Pearl Harbor attack caused. 1,993 died in the attack on Pearl Harbor. On the low end of estimates, over 129,000 people died from the nuclear bombings in Japan over the course of four months, half of which died the first day. Not including the radiation left behind. Of course, Concentration Camps were designed to kill their prisoners, and lead to Millions of deaths. So, yes, the Axis did far worse in immediate effects. But both sides did despicable things.

And that is why this show is brilliant to me. Is it the best anime I've watched? Not by a long shot. Will I remember it years from now? Probably not. But I immensely respect it for showing war as pure madness, with no regard to who's in the right or wrong. Our "protagonists" do horrible and heinous things to win, and revel in the insanity of war. Because as Miles said, they're insane. And they revel in the insanity of war. At the end of everything, no matter who wins, if there are sentient creatures left in that world, the victors will be the heroes. Be it the Monsters who praise the Black King and the Ends as saviors and heroes, killing the races that subjugated them for so long. Or be it the Demi-Humans who were liberated by the Drifters and stopped the End and their army of monsters from killing them all. They'll forget the atrocities done. Because none of that matters once you've won. You just won.

Something I liked about Yuri!!! on Ice that someone pointed out on Reddit is that if this were any other sports anime, Yuri Plisetsky would have been the child prodigy main character. Instead here he is in a supporting roll and it's about a man, Katsuki Yuri, who's never really been the best at anything in figure skating and is generally un-motivated and it's about him finding his motivation to truly succeed. I enjoy that fact a lot.

O well, can't wait for next season of Anime. I'll need to post a full list of shows I'd recommend next week. But for now, for the Aussies in particular, check out the Fate/Grand Order episode over on AnimeLab. Always good to support a service that brings more Anime down here.

And Fate fans need to grab the game that'll come out this month. I can confirm from the Japanese version that the gameplay is fun and that it has more dialogue than a novel (which I can't read yet >> )

It's clever and very satisfying and I agree that there's this attitude of just not giving a fuck so everyone can have a good time. @Miles

Assuming that the tagging does work and you'll forgive my arrogance a little, I'd like to give a little bit of an analysis on Drifters from a military history perspective, as it's been one of the very few shows I've ever seen to get the heart of pre-modern warfare.

On the ease with which the Drifters take control of the country

While I don't deny that the Drifters have it very easy, there's actually a pretty solid explanation as to why they aren't immediately overwhelmed. In Episode 5, Nobunaga mentions that the Empire's troops are, in this location, third rate. This is because of the long war which the Empire has been waging on the surrounding nations, which are a long way from the the elves' former territory. As a result, there is a natural drain of resources towards these areas. The best and most competent troops will be sent there, while green, moderately unfit (physically or psychologically) and plain incompetent officers and soldiers will remain to police the interior of the Empire.

This results in a situation where the Empire cannot withdraw experienced troops who would be capable of resisting the Drifters, and are forced to rely on vastly inferior troops, whose morale is easily broken. The elves, meanwhile, might have little experience in warfare, but their treatment has caused them to hate the empire, and Toyohisa is an excellent leader of men, knowing how best to encourage and urge them on. This creates high morale, and Nobunaga's military experience allows the Drifters to exploit this to their fullest extent. Vegetius recommended using green troops against enemy foraging or scouting parties in order to build up their confidence and their tolerance for bloodshed, which is exactly how the Drifters go about things.

As to why the main army couldn't send even a small detachment to reinforce the capital or to fight what the Empire saw as a threat to the supply lines to the front, the answer is simple: distance. A cavalry force cannot sustain more than 30 miles per day for a substantial period of time, and infantry cannot sustain more than 15 or 20 miles, depending on their burdens and training. By the time a message reached the front and any significant force could be dispatched, the Drifters and their army had likely already freed the dwarves.

On why Drifters stands out as opposed to GATE and others

I think the simplest reason for this is that Drifters gets pre-modern warfare in a way that I've rarely seen outside of good historical fiction. Unlike GATE, where everyone in the Special Region have little more intelligence and talent than a chimp, Drifters at least shows the inhabitants of the world as being halfway competent, if not as aggressive or practiced as the Drifters are. And, again, I think some of the lack of skill and ability is due to the massive war draining competent personnel away from the internal regions of the Empire while the previous suppression of the conquered inhabitants results in relative peace.

Beyond this, where GATE had idiots building fences inside a fortified gate instead of a barbican outside the gate and bricking most of the other gates up, and had enemy soldiers open a massive fucking town gate to get a better look at something they could have better seen from the top of the wall, Drifters has soldiers of the Empire falling back into their fortifications and preparing quite well to repel any attacks. And, instead of having two forces attack each other head on, as GATE does with the whole embassy situation, Drifters shows a variety of tactics being used.

Drifters also enters more into the psychology of the pre-modern warrior, and explains why the tactics work the way they do, rather than just explaining the tactics. In showing that he understands how battles were won and lost, Kouta Hirano draws us into the world and allows us to understand as well. This engages us, and we feel that we've learned something, which is a positive feeling. We're therefore more likely to remember the show and have it stick with us because of how smart it makes us feel.

    On the use of firearms

This isn't actually something you brought up in the video, but it's also the second weakest part of the finale. First time users of early firearms had terrible aim. The blast, noise and recoil, combined with the natural fear and adrenaline battles causes, resulted in the vast majority of their projectiles missing their intended target. For instance, in 1568 a commentator said of Spanish arquebusiers:

“To  fire their arquebuses they charge them to the mouth [of the gun] with powder; they take hold of them half way along the barrel with their left hand and move their arm as far away as they can, to prevent the fire from touching them ( as they are so afraid of it); and when they light it with the wick in their other hand they turn their face away, just like those who are waiting for the bloodletter to open a vein; and even when they fire they close their eyes and go pale, and shake like an old house”. (Quoted after Lorraine White. The Experience of Spain’s Early Modern Soldiers: Combat, Welfare and Violence. // War In History 2002; 9; 1.)

Frederick the Great, for example, ordered his musketeers to aim at the ground 7 or 8 meters in front of the enemy when they were 30-50 yards away in order to compensate for the recoil, while Robert Munroe argued that soldiers should never aim any higher or lower than the middle of their enemy's middle. Given Nobunaga's monologue on the real effect of firearms on inexperienced troops, it would have been a good moment to show how they effected the End's soldiers even without high casualties, or else show that the matchlocks needed to be aimed low in order to compensate for the "Sacred Band of Thebes'" lack of experience in this regard.

On the portrayal of homosexuality in Drifters

The attitudes expressed by Nobunaga and Toyohisa are in not, in fact, a reflection on attitudes of the time. While it's not unusual for Toyohisa to be freaked out by the Count St. Germain and for Nobunaga to express that transvestites/transexuals can't be trusted (this is a pretty common theme in cultures with only two genders), there should definitely have been more acceptance of the Count's "Sacred Band". Not only was homosexuality and common and accepted part of Japanese military culture in both Nobunaga and Toyohisa's time periods, but Nobunaga is actually pretty well known for taking part in the practice.

Rather than disgust or thoughts that the Sacred Band must be unmanly or incompetent, there should ahve been some question about such relationships being between two men, rather than a man and a teen, as was common and appropriate to their era. That is the weakest part of not only the finale but also the whole show. The show had all this fantastic research and knowledge, and yet blatant homophobic bullshit makes it in as well.

Agree on all, except the last part: Oda and Toyo dont actually feel disgust or express any of those emotions about the Sacred Band of Thebes, in fact they don't mention it at all, except when Oda realizes that Germain picked them, at least partly, because of their sexuality. Toyo calls them to attention and praises them as good soldiers, and that's it, anything else is immediately forgotten.

And I don't think the distrust Germain because he is a transvestite, they just use it as a rude way of talking about him. They don't trust him because they recognize him as very smart and he himself admits to being quick to abandon an ally, Orte. They are just rude to everyone about everything. Hannibal is senile, Oda is old, Olminu has boobs, Toyo is a fool, dwarves are hairy, the captured soldier is a virgin, Hitler has a dumb mustache, etc. Yoichi is the only one they don't make fun of.

    • Hergrim FIRST Member Star(s) Indication of membership status - One star is a FIRST member, two stars is Double Gold

      @Asterikos

Episode 11, 4:00-4:30. While the discussion about whether or not to trust Count St. Germain could, for the most part, be ascribed to his being very smart and prone to betrayal, but Nobunaga very specifically mentions that people like Count St Germain are "perculiar not only outside, but on the inside too". He then goes on about how they are weirdos and deviants. In the light of the last part of the conversation, it becomes clear that the other aspects attributed to the Count are solely due to his being a transvestite/transexual.

It's pretty clear that the elves don't think much of the Sacred Band and that the dwarves are physically sickened by them. The Drifters have more subtle reactions, but their facial expressions and "tell me they aren't what I think they are" contain strong elements of doubting that the Sacred Band could be competent. Toyo is even surprised to see that they are actually good soldiers. This on its own would not be strong evidence, but the use of a revolted dwarf at this time definitely carries an element of homophobia that is not cancelled out by Toyo realising that, in spite of their homosexuality, the Sacred Band are good soldiers.
