I want to say he's talking about the H.A.I.N.E.S position (High Arm IN Endangered Spine). The a modified first aid position you put someone in, in the case of a possible neck injury. But for anyone reading this if you see somebody seriously injured the best thing to do is to call 911 don't try to do anything out of your jurisdiction just be smart please. because like the person 2 comments below me states you may possibly injure the person even more and hospitals are already expensive enough

Whether or not the recovery position is used/should be used kinda depends on what happened to the person. If they almost drowned, are intoxicated, or have any other medical condition that might cause them to be unresponsive, then yes, recovery position all the way. However you can do serious damage to them if they were, say, hit by a car, or in some other physically traumatic event. Spinal instabilities are the most obvious, but also if you try to move someone's leg like that when they have an unstable (that is, broken) pelvis you run the very real risk of severing one or both of their femoral arteries and causing them to quickly bleed out internally. I think this is probably why it's only really taught in first aid classes in the US, so we don't have people jerking around injured people with the intent of helping.

Even in the US you're not supposed to move a patient if you didn't witness the incident unless their airway is blocked. And when help arrives, it's still a 2-3 man job putting someone on a spineboard to make sure their head doesn't move relative to their body.

The amount of time i've spend learning the recovery position as a child is ridiculous, we'd have these first aid courses in school and at scouts and such, and like 90% of them was putting each other in the recovery position

Gavin's right, though he's as eloquent about it as we've come to expect.

The idea is to get the victim off their back so they don't suffocate on their own tongue/drown in their own vomit.

(READ COMMENT BEFORE DOING THIS) Put your tongue back as far as you can and swallow. I just proved you wrong. People can die from suffocation if there head is back and this happens and they don't pull there tongue forward.

LOL ok so... in response to all these comments, I'm pretty sure most Americans know that if you see someone who's drunk you're supposed to make sure they're lying on their side so they don't choke on their own vomit. I just don't think we call it "The Recovery Position."

Just to clarify some of the British slang in this video. in British slang Mullered means being so drunk to the point where you can pass out.
So to add more context to Gavin's story.
In England pubs are much, much closer to residential areas and more common as such it's much more likely that you will be walking home after a night of drinking. So when Gavin says "So when if someone is mullered on their own or something" he is talking about finding someone passed out after a night out, on the pavement.

I'm guessing people fuck it up way too much, and they cause more damage than saving the person.
Also maybe our emergency number works good enough where it's better for a professional to get there before some amateur kills off the patient for dumbass actions.

The idea behind the Recovery Position is that you keep someone from drowning in their own vomit/injuring themselves further BEFORE the trained professionals can get there. We learnt it in Primary School for dealing with epileptic students. It's not to be used in cases where there is neck/spinal/crush injuries. The Recovery Position is also not something that can really cause harm if it is done incorrectly, unless the hurt party has a spinal/neck/crush injury, or their head is left in a incorrect position that results in their airways being blocked. Every single person I went to Primary School with learnt how to do the Recovery Position, because we had epileptic students at my school, and the parents of those students preferred their child not to drown in their own vomit.

I think the guys were assuming that if there was dude in the road it was probably because of a crash which might have caused spinal trauma. If you think there might be a neck injury, then you really don't want to move them. If they vomit, then roll them, but make sure their head and neck stay in the same position.

    • Golden-Reaper FIRST Member Star(s) Indication of membership status - One star is a FIRST member, two stars is Double Gold Achieve

yes , you are right, i was going to say something along those lines but decided against it for the sake of space and simplicity. first aid training teaches you that you need to assess the situation to determine the most likely reason for unconsciousness first , if the person is semi conscious you can test to see if they can still feel their feet and hence determine the possibility of spinal truma

was on a dig up in Orkney last summer and one of the dig leaders was ex military with the highest first aid rating on site, so one day we had down time he taught the whole team the recovery position, along with triage positions and how to do an emergency lift of someone.

they have different first-aid laws over there than here in the US. very different.

    • VeryPlite Medli the Earth Sage

We have a recovery position too but it shouldn't be used if there is a head, spine, or crush injury (even if the head and spine are not the body part crushed). Because you can kill them, increase the injury, or make that body part unrecoverable. Gavin is right, there is a recovery position (even in the US), but he is also wrong. It shouldn't be used for a car accident since you should always assume the head or spine could possibly be injured in a car accident.

    • Orrenman FIRST Member Star(s) Indication of membership status - One star is a FIRST member, two stars is Double Gold Don't Call it a Comeback

totally. i think the main difference is the law surrounding liability after you attempt to help someone who's been hurt. in the UK, i believe, if you have a certain first aid certification, you are immune from any lawsuits as long as you follow procedure. i think those are the Good Samaritan Laws.

I'm sure burnie learned it in college since he was going to go into that, but its also not supposed to be used for car accidents or any situation where there is a possibility of spinal damage

    • mando1123 FIRST Member Star(s) Indication of membership status - One star is a FIRST member, two stars is Double Gold The MandoMerc

The comment below this has a very well put explanation of the recovery position's use. Usually in a vehicle-vehicle car accident there is a small chance of someone being ejected from the car. In terms of a pedestrian-vehicle accident the best thing to do is call 911 and open the air way as Burnie said. The recovery position is only to make sure fluid doesn't obstruct the airway if there is a possibility of vomiting.

  • LocalGHOST FIRST Member Star(s) Indication of membership status - One star is a FIRST member, two stars is Double Gold

To clear up some of the confusion I'm seeing regarding the recover position vs. leaving someone as they lay and doing a simple jaw thrust. The recover position should only be used if the subject's spine and neck are known to be stable and the subject has a risk of vomiting and occluding the airway.

However, if you find someone on the side/middle of the road and it's clear that there has been trauma via collision or some other means then you would need to take spinal precautions into consideration. This means that you DO NOT roll and/or drag your subject around as that can cause more damage such as being paralyzed or even death. In which case Mr. Burns is on the right path, where you would want to do a jaw thrust maneuver to open the airway. Preferably you would also want to keep them in the position that you've found them and keep the subject from moving around should they come around. Now, I can already hear some people complaining that you would want to do a full head tilt chin lift, but if there is spinal trauma that would only be a last resort should you not be able to acquire a stable airway.

All this can vary depending on the state/country you live in and what the local protocols are at the time of intervention. Should you wish to know more on how to potentially save a life, I would suggest taking a CPR/First Aid class, or if dealing with broken people sounds like fun, just become an EMT and work your way up from there.

There's also the issue of in the context that gavin explained it (car collison, or hit by a car, or just unknown injury) you shouldn't use it because if there is a possibility of spinal trauma then moving a person completely over onto their side could kill or paralyze them for life.

Technically they are both right. There is a recovery position, but you probably shouldn't mess with their neck and you need to free up their airway. If the person is crushed in anyway, don't touch them if they aren't dead or in immediate danger. Sometimes pulling someone who is crushed from debris can kill them or make that part of their body unrecoverable.

    • rebkos FIRST Member Star(s) Indication of membership status - One star is a FIRST member, two stars is Double Gold

@drad99 no if someone is suffering from a heart attack you want to be doing chest compression until or use an AED until help arrives.

    • VeryPlite Medli the Earth Sage

Recovery position is for an emergency that does not involve spine or head injury, crush injuries (even if the spine or head seem fine), and it won't help heart attacks at all but it won't necessarily hurt either. It's more for injuries not involving broken/ crushed/ injured bones. So if someone is lying on the road because they were hit by a car, you shouldn't put them in the recovery position. But technically Gavin's argument was just that such a position existed, even if he doesn't know when to use it.

over in the states you dont want to move someone who has been involved in a car accident or any accident really. the reason being is that you dont know if the injured person has spinal injuries . moving could cause further irreparable damage including death and paralysis. so if you know there is no spinal injury then it is ok to move said victim but if not known all that is needed is a jaw thrust. further more keep patient from moving if at all possible

I'm in The Army and I swear Gavin is partially right on this. They teach us the recovery position in CLS.
