I love Shirobako. I work in live action film/tv production but really want to get into animation. I guess for me it's relateable because I work in the film industry and know what crazy production life is like. I also REALLY LOVE Sakura Quest. It just feels nice to watch something that's slower paced and about an aspect of culture and society that does not get much attention in mainstream media. I grew up in a town similar to the one is Sakura Quest, so once again that's why I probably relate to it so much.

I watched Shirobako before you covered it in Fan Service, and I loved it.  I am a graphic artist and web designer, so I do know something about creative projects, but I've also been a huge anime fan for about 20 years.  So for me it was easy to appreciate the series.  I love being able to understand things in general in depth, and even more so to see how an anime is made from all angles.  It definitely gave me insight into the final projects that I see.  And the story itself and characters were also good.

I rate Shirobako  star star star star star

Lot of positive comments about Shirobako, starting to feel like I am the only one who doesn't care about it at all.  I honestly just tune out for the Shirobako part of Fan Service.  It is a real turn off for me because it doesn't have anything about it to hook me in and I'm looking for something to de-stress, relax and enjoy.

Can't win them all I suppose but I really love anime club because it introduces me to anime I would never consider but now truly love ie Erased and Saga of Tanya the Evil.

Hope Fan Service kicks off another season and that there are two interesting anime for anime club this time.

Finally! I've been waiting for James and Elyse literally since I heard Fan Service existed! Hopefully Lawrence gets to be a guest soon!

Also, to the question about Shirobako:

I watched it as it aired week by week and loved every minute of it. I have never even come close to working in the industry but I still found myself relating to the show in much the same way as you all describe. I found myself getting very stressed out watching it some weeks but still really enjoyed getting a glimpse of how things worked behind the scenes.

My friends (who also don't work in the industry) had very lengthy discussions about Shirobako each week and it honestly overshadowed a lot of the other shows that were airing at the same time which we normally would have discussed more. The characters and all the hard work and effort they were putting into everything they did was really inspirational.

Overall, I definitely don't think any of you are up your own ass (as Grey put it) and I really enjoy hearing your thoughts on the anime and connecting it to your own real world experiences. I also don't think that any knowledge of animation or production is necessary to enjoy the Shirobako but it does seem like it brings a unique light to it.

About Shirobako: As someone who knew little to nothing about what goes into the production of anime, I found myself incredibly fascinated by the sheer amount of work and effort that goes into it. There's such a variety of tasks that flow together to create the end product. I've always had admiration for those behind anime but after seeing Shirobako, I have so much more respect and admiration. I'm incredibly grateful as well.

Also, the deadlines and hectic moments hit me quite hard so I can only imagine what it's like to actually live that.

So thank you RT Animation team, each and every one of you, for making the content I enjoy immensely.

He's talking about the Bechdel Test. It's a simple test that looks at 1- how many women are in the work, 2- do they interact with each other, and 3- do they talk about anything other than a man. For example, if there are only two women in a movie and the only time they interact is to talk about or maybe argue over a male character then it does NOT pass the Bechdel test.

    So... a couple things--

    ▪ James & Elyse are the best and I was so stoked they could be on the show this week.

    ▪ I know One Piece is intimidating and everyone there is too busy for that kind of commitment but I love that we got to talk about it this episode. It has such a long history in both the anime and manga worlds and so much has stemmed from it. I was nearly in tears with James' clip and I hope if they do watch the One Piece movie Mamoru Hasoda directed that it will spark enough of a curiosity to give it a try.

    ▪ I'm not anywhere close to the animation industry (I work for a bank) but I still find Shirobako FASCINATING. I will say that I have a higher interest in animation than most people I know but to see what actually goes on behind the scenes puts thing into perspective and gives me a deeper appreciation for the work that goes into creating something so special. Everything from character design to background art to the research needed for accurate interpretations of seemingly everyday objects needs to be so carefully worked out and the passion that everyone has for what their doing just overwhelms me.

I think what really gets me are those moments when it feels like everything is one hiccup away from falling apart. Everyone in that studio is there because they all want it to be a success and at the end of the day we find that it's okay to ask for help because everyone is on the same page and wants what they're doing to be the best it can be. I also really enjoy that it's not JUST about working in the industry, it's also about the people and their stories.

I was in tears when Miyamori's mother called her saying that she and her father had to rewatch the credits of an episode a few times just to see her name scroll by again. I will say without shame that this show has had me crying on more than one occasion since then. It really got me how people can be affected by the industry and how those relationships all tie together. I felt the same way when reading the Bakuman manga and seeing what it takes to get serialized and have continued success. It puts a lot of what goes into the end product into perspective.

    ▪ I'm gonna go watch this 3rd Aerial Girls Squad episode right now.

    ▪ CANNOT WAIT FOR MY HERO ACADEMIA TALK HOLY SHIIIIIIIIT AFKJDLS;A ╰(✧∇✧)╯

I actually really enjoyed Shirobako as a person who doesn't work in the industry. As I learn more about production companies from anime that I have enjoyed, and following RT for so long, it was a nice little peek in what its like to make the things we all know and love (and lets be honest sometimes hate).

I watched Shirobako when it was airing (watching it again now). Its still one of my favourite anime, and the best show that started in 2014. While you take it to heart because of your work, its popularity from those outside the industry was its 'meta': it was an anime about making anime, giving a window into what that was like. And it was fascinating to come to understand that. A similar series was Bakuman, a manga about writing manga. It does help that the cast are exceptionally well written, and the story is grounded, never feeling forced

Side fact: Shirobako was massively, and unexpectedly, popular, with DVDs being sold out for months after the their release. It was unexpected due to the mixed reception of P.A. Works previous anime, the melodramatic but gorgeous love-ploygon of Nagi-Asu and the waste of time and resources for the staff, licensors and audience that was Glasslip.

With the Death Note and now Cowboy Bebop series on the way, I wonder if Anime would be more suited for a longer TV format than movies when adapting for live action.

When I think about it that way, I could easily imagine a lot of Anime series that would fit so feel on the sci-fi channels or just general drama ones.

Witch Hunter Robin would be my pick for an adaptation that shouldn't be too hard to pull off.

The reason for getting married in June actually comes up in the Anime Lucky Star. But yeah, mostly it's to do with the old Goddess Juno.

For mystery Anime I really like Gosick for it's Sherlock Holmes style/era. The whole mix of science and the occult period is just really fun.

For books, go with Zaregoto (rereleased as 'Decapitation, Kubikiri Cycle.)

Great murder mystery series by the Author (Nisioisin) of the Bakemonogatari series and the Death Note novel The Los Angeles BB Murder Cases.

Thanks to Cole I got very little sleep last night as I was watching Rokka: Brave of Six Flowers. Enjoyed it a lot, but kept thinking I recognised Flamie's voice (a rare thing in itself, as it's harder to recognise voices in non-native languages and voice actors tend to, well, change their voice). I was convinced enough to check IMDB and low and behold she was Hinazuki in Erased, which I had watched... because of the first episodes of Fan Service.

Also when I first found shirobako I could not stop watching it and because I've seen it before is probably the only reason i can stand to hold off a week for more. ps the "I want to watch the anime they made" thing is so true the areal girls show is loosely based off of strike witches and is probably the only reason i watched it

Can we have a fan service that talks about Trigun? I feel that it hasn't been talk about at all. Its one of my favorite anime and its very westernized story although it may be old. Also the music may be my favorite.
