Gosling was great in Breaker High, I think that lead him to a lot of where he got to now. Aw I remember him in Young Hercules. He did a lot of great stuff for Canadians before he got big!! Def had a 90s crush on him.

They talk so much about how did he become so funny, but growing up in Canada in the 90s I believe most of us will know that he started his career in comedy in Breaker High when he was a teenager

Also i lost my shit when they did the scene at the Griffith observatory because i had walked in the same area and touched the same ledge with the pendulum before. I even took a picture of the mural up top similarly to how they had shot it during the scene.

Something too look forward every week. Already starting a list of films to watch from the current episodes out. Thanks!

Was disappointed in the lack of Breaker High talk. My introduction to Gosling and a really different character than what he plays now. The total dork trying to be super smooth was comedy gold.

Completely agree with Tyler about Interstellar. It's the worst Christopher Nolan movie in my honest opinion, i've tried to like it but it's just so hammy; for lack of a better term. The moment that broke me was Matt Damon's character name, seriously, Dr Hugh Mann.. I couldn't believe it was the same Nolan who made Inception and Dark Knight.

Whiplash is one of my all time favourites so that got me even more excited for La La Land, which I loved. Damien Chazelle's got so much going for him. I believe his next film is about the life of Neil Armstrong, and Gosling is playing him. So things are looking great for Ryan. Love the show by the way. Keep it up!

The problem with Ryan Gosling is this...

He's typecast af. He always plays the douchebag who always gets redeemed at the end. Just like in La La Land. That movie had SERIOUS pacing problems, and he didn't help it. And that makes me sad, because he's that good of an actor, he's believable...he just needs to shed that 'redeemable douchebag' image and go balls to the wall.

    • Jon FIRST Member Star(s) Indication of membership status - One star is a FIRST member, two stars is Double Gold The Risemonger

I am going to gently disagree on Gosling being typecasted. And then I am going to vehemently disagree with you on La La Land pacing. I thought as far as editing goes, La La Land was pretty well done. Also, if you wanna see him not be the 'redeemable douchebag' I would suggest Lars & the Real Girl.

I'm in the same camp as Tyler and Andy with Gosling. My introduction to him was in Drive and that movie was just so stylish and so cool that I had to go see everything he was in prior. He has so much intensity in that film that you can't take your eyes off him. And if you watch it again you realize he doesn't say much at all throughout the film. It's always him staring at something or someone, but that alone is enough to sell his emotions and motivations.

One of my favorite scenes is in the diner and what makes it so great is how the shot is framed. Normally when people are talking in a film you see both of them talking back and forth, but during the entire conversation the camera lingers on Gosling's face. And what REALLY sold it for me was when the person he was talking to walks away, the camera STILL stays on Gosling. It just shows how much power and influence he has over any situation he's in and it comes off both slightly unsettling and badass.

Impressed that Paul Newman is on Tyler's list, I so get that. And I loved that Godzilla movie, thanks for validating me.

It may have been good to hear the female side since Ryan Gosling is widely thought to be a celebrity a lot of women like. Like 2/3 of the guests haven't seen The Notebook which is so associated with him. Just a thought, in case you choose to do an episode in the future that is similar to this. You also left out my favorite Ryan Gosling movie, Murder by Numbers.

Excellent callback to Remember the Titans from Tyler. Man, he just couldn't figure out how to cover the pass, not to mention lacked the closing speed of your boy, Donald Faison.

The comedic ability of Goslin for me came through when I first saw him doing a bit with Will Ferrell on Kimmel's show called "Knife Guys" back in 2013. He wasn't amazing, but it was the first time I saw him doing comedy and thought, "Shit, I want to see him do more stuff like that."

Also, speaking of Pratt films, Magnificent Seven was quite a solid western. Not an all-timer, but definitely well above average, mostly because Denzel freaking owned in the lead role. They did the original justice and I loved the ending.

I do hope they bring this show back. I've been missing Film & TV discussion since ScreenPlay got cancelled a few years ago. That being said, I completely disagree with what a lot of what Tyler had to say about La La Land.

I fell in love with this film because it was the opposite of what so many award season films are these days. They're dark, sad, and depressing, while La La Land gave me nothing but joy from beginning to end. The soundtrack was phenomenal, I thought Gosling and Stone were amazing together, and the mix of the bright colors just made an overall great experience. I'll admit that I'm not ashamed to cry while watching a film, but typically it is from a place of sadness, but during La La Land, I noticed I was tearing up out of joy, just seeing this amazing film unfold before me. It was a love letter to old school Hollywood and musicals, and it was my favorite film of last year.

What Andy had said interested me about the ending of La La Land gave me a bit of a different perspective. I interpreted that the last sequence was what Emma Stone's character was imagining her life had she stayed with Gosling. But it was interesting to see how people can see different things in the same film.

With animated movies coming out each year, and having Disney, Pixar, and Dreamworks crank out so many, I would enjoy an episode that depicts what makes an animated movie a good movie, rather than just shill for kids to look at. Comparing production companies, themes, and topics.

I get its their style but Jon and Tyler really need better t-shirts. Guaranteed that no one looks good after a transition from Gosling, but guys with mushy collars being dragged down by a mic is not the best impression.

Content-wise, I enjoy the cuts between segments as it makes this feel like more of a show and less of a podcast. Also, it stays topical-ish while not have a date of feeling passe; I watched all four over the past couple days and didn't feel like I missed the boat on some topics.

Existenz (EGGS-is-tens) is basically if someone took all the bad parts of The Matrix and pretended they were M Night Shyamalan remaking it and actually succeeded in making a movie that's somewhat entertaining. Christopher Eccleston, Ian Holm, Willem Defoe, and of course Jude Law. I have no idea why it's not more well-known but I'm glad it isn't.

Despite spoiling La La Land for myself, this actually convinced me to see it more than I wanted to before. As for this show, I'd prefer some broader topics. Sounds like you covered that last week, but I didn't watch it since I really have no interest in Stranger Things. Keep the show going. Make it longer and maybe broader. The way you guys went deep into Rogue One's storytelling was absolutely fascinating to listen to. But maybe remember not everyone can always see the newest films. But in short, I  barbara Enjoy this show.

If I've said it once, I've said it a thousand times... Gosling should've earned an award for Crazy, Stupid Love if only for that look of indignation in the scene where Carell's character opens a velcro wallet in front of him. That is an iconic moment in modern-day film.

I loved la la land, but I'm with Tyler on the musical front. Other musicals have much better songs and more remembered songs. There's no song in la la land that's iconic like in pretty much every other musical (mamma Mia, grease lightning, cell block tango, etc)
