This is the first episode of this podcast I've watched and I really greatly enjoyed it. I haven't watched it till now because I'm not a big movie buff and I haven't seen tons of movies that people would consider must-see classics. But I gave this episode a try because I do love monster movies and horror movies in general, and now I feel like I'll probably go back and watch all the other episodes because I had a lot of fun listening to you guys.

Also I personally would have to place The Thing at the number one spot on my list. The horrific imagery they were able to achieve with practical effects, the paranoia inherently caused by the idea of not knowing whether someone truly is who they pretend to be, the minimalist soundtrack that perfectly mirrors the feel of the desolate arctic wasteland, and the fact that the fate of the whole world is on the line in the plot as opposed to just a small group of people all make it one of the most memorable and terrifying movies to me.

If asked for a good vampire movie and I don't want to be mocked, I say that my favorite is Interview with a Vampire. The shameful truth that I don't actually feel all that ashamed of is that Van Helsing is my favorite vampire movie. This is why I rarely listen to critics. If I think it'll be entertaining, then I'll watch it.

But my favorite monster movie is definitely the Brendan Frasier Mummy! Partly because it was a big part of my young teenage years, but also because it was the first movie I ever saw that made me both laugh and hide behind my mother.

Okay, if Sigourney Weaver's in Iron Fist, I might have to watch it.

My list would be (If Terminator and Underworld (Underworld 1, 2, and 5 are not trash) don't count) :

    Pacific Rim

    Frankenstein

    Werner Herzog's Nosferatu

    Dracula (Christopher Lee)

    The Mummy (Brendan Frasier)

Jason and the Argonauts (Not necessarily one monster, but the giant statue, the hydra, and the skeletons should definitely count)

    Original King Kong

    Cabin in the Woods

    Jaws

    Alien

What, how could godzilla not make the list in some form? He's literally the king of monster,s and for the time, they created a whole style of practical effects and constantly reinvented as the movies progressed through time. It's your personal opinion and I can absolutely respect that, but you can't deny to honor him for genre that godzilla created.

Top 10 (barring the giant animal subgenre so Jaws will not be on this list). There are also a few ties in the rankings.

    1. Gojira (Godzilla: King of the Monsters in the U.S.)
    2. King Kong (1933)
    3. Beast From 20,000 Fathoms
    4. The Thing (1982) / Godzilla (2014)
    5. Rodan / Godzilla vs. Biollante
    6. Gamera: Guardian of the Universe / Gamera: Attack of Legion
    7. Jeepers Creepers / Cloverfield
    8. Creature From The Black Lagoon
    9. Reign of Fire / Trollhunter
    10. Ghidorah, The Three-Headed Monster

Honorable Mentions: The War of the Gargantuas, Tremors, The Host, 20 Million Miles to Earth, The Valley of Gwangi, Kong: Skull Island, The Mist

King Kong (1933) wasn't in that top 10? Color me shocked, because that's pretty much the grandfather of all giant monster movies. Another good kaiju flick is none other than the Harryhausen classic The Beast From 20,000 Fathoms, which kicked off the era of atomic monsters in 1953.

Thing is, Dracula counts (no pun intended) but I wouldn't say Underworld does and Twilight definitely doesn't. I think it's more about the discovery of a monster by several humans and the struggle with it that qualifies something as a monster movie.

I can't believe they brought up Trollhunter. I don't think I know anybody personally whose seen it. I watched it on Netflix one day when I was bored and loved that it was such an crazy concept for a movie especially a "mockumentary" style movie and pulled it off decently. I never really considered it a scary movie but that scene in the cave with the trolls and the christian cameraman definitely was freaky. Maybe I should rewatch it.

Little bit of a letdown after last week's fantastic episode.  Would have liked to see a real in depth discussion of Kong: Skull Island and the giant monster genre.  And I get they're probably not the most well versed on foreign monster movies, but Shin Godzilla and the Host should have been mentioned at some point.  There are some legitimately good giant monster films out there.

The fact that you don't have the blob on there is a tragedy. It's an awesome practical effects monster movie (both versions) and is a concept that has been homaged/parodied for decades. And unlike shaun of the dead, it doesn't break your monster rule.

. I don't get all the hate around 1999 Godzilla. It's a fun sci-fi monster movie. The effects aren't consistent though, some are ok & others terrible. But that was 1999 for you.

I love that film regardless, and quote it all the time.

But one film franchise you all missed was Tremors, that first movie was just stupid fun. The sequels just went the way of Sharknado. Dumber and dumber every movie. But still they deserve a mention.

What tyler is referring to with 'the thing's ending: The 'drink' that they share at the end is actually a molotov cocktail. Kurt Russle offers it to the other guy who drinks it without reaction, so Kurt knows full well that he's an alien, but it doesn't matter because they're both just going to freeze to death.

Jon you are 100% correct that Interview with a Vampire is great. Yes it is a touch gay but a fantastic movie, not to mention this was the movie that started the trend for vampires to be beautiful and created the romanticism of vampires upon which all modern vampires movies take their lead!

edit: I would define a monster movie where the main element is an inhuman being that proposes a sense of danger and/or excitement.

edit 2: At the end of predator 2 an Alien skull can be seen on the trophy wall

Again, that was more easter egg than actual cannon at the time (in the same way that you can argue that indiana jones is in the star wars universe because R2D2 and C3PO are a heiroglyph, as well as star trek because the milledium falcon is part of the attack on a borg cube in first contact, and R2D2 is part of the debris field in the first new star trek movie). It was only after much fan theories and popular requests did they finally say it was.

I agree with most of this list. Except Godzilla. A the original 1954 Japanese Godzilla is an amazing film about what the horrors of nuclear destruction really are and their effect on people. B Shin Godzilla. I know that many people haven't seen it because of its limited run but it is amazing. It takes all your preconceived notions about Godzilla, turns them on its head, and tells an amazing story about the dangers of bureaucracy and how that can be dangerous for a satiety. But other than those two movies I agree with every point.

Is Primeval a monster movie I think so. A giant crocodile? That is horrific, but who am I to say? Maybe deep down I'm afraid of any apex predator that lived through the K-T extinction. Physically unchanged for a hundred million years, because it's the perfect killing machine. A half ton of cold-blooded fury, the bite force of 20,000 Newtons, and stomach acid so strong it can dissolve bones and hoofs.

I don't think a single one of the movies on the top ten list is an actual "monster movie." Bela Lugosi? Boris Karloff? This episode was supposed to be about King Kong, what do Alien and The Thing have in common with King Kong and Godzilla? "Horror" is its own distinct thing, you know.

    • Daexulin FIRST Member Star(s) Indication of membership status - One star is a FIRST member, two stars is Double Gold

I would disagree, the vast majority of monster movies are a subset of the horror genre. While the original definitely deserve their mention the vast majority have not seen them and would be forsaken by most of the audience of the show.

You seriously think King Kong and Godzilla are "horror"? That they belong in the same genre as Alien?

    • Daexulin FIRST Member Star(s) Indication of membership status - One star is a FIRST member, two stars is Double Gold

It's really a matter of defining how a genre is comprised. But no, I would not put Peter Jackson's Kong or the new one in as horror but rather an action adventure movie. The original King Kong though I would define as horror, is it scary in our today's terms? no but when it came out it was.

Not all monster movies are horror, like Iron Giant. I would put this in the monster movie sub-genre but it is not a horror movie. The vast majority of monsters movie though are horror movies which is why the monster movie sub-genre is usually placed under the horror genre more than any other genre.

Yeah, wouldve liked to get a thought of their opinion of more of the movie. It kindof felt like they got sidetracked away from it but I did enjoy the discussion of the monster genre  (man this all makes me miss my film study classes, especially my horror film study)

Oh Idea for a future episode with a fast and the furious movie coming out.

The art of the car chase. You could discuss the best care chases from Bullitt, the Fast franchise, Bond movies, and arguable some of the best modern chases from the first three Bourne Movies.

Or maybe an episode discussing hit or miss directors like Michael Bay and JJ Abrams and stuff?

Just car movies in general would be a great topic. Vanishing Point, Dirty Mary Crazy Larry, etc.
