Rogue One is my Second favorite Star Wars movie of all time, only behind Episode V. I love it so much, it shows that anyone can die at any time.

Comic relief stops a serious movie from being exhausting like Ashley said but it also makes the more serious and emotional moments more serious and emotional by comparison; the comic relief is a palette cleanser so that the drama is more effective.

I actually liked Jin Urso a lot. She was just such a hero the whole time and she managed to show you the rebel alliance from a perspective of them being a little bit corrupt, and not always the good guys. Not only that but she was out for a personal journey and was reluctant to join anything bigger which I think made her more relatable. I remember K2 and Cassian's names too but the rest kind of slipped by. I really liked those other characters like the pilot who I just referred to as Snoop Dogg, and the blind guy and heavy were very likeable too in my opinion. I actually think this is one of the few Star Wars movies that is a good movie, not just a good Star Wars movie or good Sci Fi movie. I thought it was WAY better than 7 too, because 7 was just so similar to 4.

Comic relief can sometimes be too much. Age of Ultron suffered to me from everyone trying to be a comic relief. Not every character needs to be funny. You need some straight guys for other characters to bounce off.

My problem with Rogue One was that I knew barely more about the main characters than the random rebel soldiers dying on that beach, and cared about them about as much. I appreciate a single film as a hard time establishing so many characters, but then I think of Oberyn in GoT. They established his character and what he was fighting for perfectly, and it was gut-wrenching when he died, but if you added up all his scenes I bet it wouldn't total forty minutes.

Rogue One's problem was poor character development and script writing. It needed focus, so if they cut out some of the characters, we may have cared for them better. I don't think it matters if they die in the end, take The Departed for example, how many deaths were in that film, but we still have a reaction to those characters.

Is it sad that everyone was saying they could only remember K2-SO's name, but I could remember all but Baze Malbus and Chirrut Imwe because their names were basically said in passing and never repeated (and I'm not even certain I could say Chirrut Imwe correctly lol)

Enjoy the Show drinking game: 1. Take a sip every time Jon makes a gesture or moves his hands.

    2. Be ready to call an ambulance within 10 minutes.

It's amazing how Alan Tudyk played a snarky robot in I, Robot just as masterfully as Rogue One 12 years before, but Sonny and K2-SO are completely different characters.

Loved Rogue One, hated Suicide Squad, but I thought Suicide Squad, at least the extended edition, had better character development than Rogue One.

I will not hammer away explaining why I think Rogue One was was a successful movie, but I will say that Episode 7 was garbage. It has far worse writing than Rogue One, but it also has 2 future movies to finish it's story; so I'm keeping an open mind on the trilogy. But do not say that Episode 7 was any good.

The one thing I've got to disagree with is Jon being pretty harsh on Rogue One for not doing something the movie wasn't even trying to do.  What I mean is that the movie was exactly what it's supposed to be, but he's critiquing it as if it were a different kind of movie than it is.  The ironic thing is he actually uses that a similar distinction in the conversation on movies that don't need comic relief.

The big example is his criticism of Rogue One as being meh because we aren't given time to fully know the characters, therefore not caring about them, to the point that "you can't even remember any of their names!" (though I'd argue that's a result of good dialogue writing, not poor characters:  Basically the anti-Titanic).  That's not bad writing or characters, but it's about what movie Rogue One is supposed to be.  Sometimes, a movie should be a character(s) portrait; about the characters, with the setting as a vehicle (i.e BvS).  Sometimes, a movie should be a world immersion; about an event(s), with characters as the vehicle (i.e Schindler's List).  BvS isn't mediocre because it has no levity, it's mediocre because it's a movie that's supposed to be about characters and competing ideologies, that has zero characterisation for any lead (also a cluttered, swiss cheese plot, but moving on!).  Schindler's List is about Oskar Schindler every bit as much as Rogue One is about Jyn Erso.  They are the center of the movie, but the movie is about the greater conflict they find themselves in (The Holocaust vs. the Death Star conflict).  Batman v Superman is (or should have been) about a conflict between Batman and Superman's ideals.  Schindler's List is about the Holocaust.  Jon's point about character names holds in Schindler's list.  Who here, without looking it up, can tell me Ben Kingsly's character name in Schindler's List?  What about Ralph Fiennes?  Or any character that isn't Oskar Schindler?  I'm sure some will, but many of us also know the character names from Rogue One, too.  It's harder to remember character names in an event driven movie because the character's are not the central point or focus.  The movie isn't constantly putting it in our faces; we get our intros and we move on.  You get to know them as people in the present, not individual stories over an arc.  We aren't supposed to go into Rogue One and view Jyn Erso how we view Luke or Leia, or care about her the same.  We're supposed to appreciate her.  Rogue One is the Halo: Reach of Star Wars.  We know how it's going to end, both the smaller story and the greater franchise arc.  We're pretty sure going in what's going to happen to the characters.  We don't care about them becuase of intricate backstories and relationshops we see (though Jyn and her father apply).  We care about them because of what they are a part of, and where their story leads into.

I appreciate that Rogue One focused on the broader events, but I suppose it's all just perspective and opinion!  (which is another cool point of the show in that it sparks a lot of intelligent discussion!  It isn't about right or wrong!)

(plus the Vader hallway scene might be the best Star Wars moment to come out of the new millenium).

I'm interested to see what the 3rd topic is.  I like that the show is a mix of analysis and appreciation, instead of just straight disection/nit-picking, or straight fan-boy/girling.  It's just a circle of friends talking about movies!

But seriously though, the last few Harry Potter movies=greatness?  I'm not a book purist in the slightest, but... *cough*

TL;DR:  Rogue One is, as is Schindler's List, different type of movie than what most are trying to be, which is ok.  It's certainly not perfect (uncanny valley Tarkin, for example), bit it's a bit unfair to criticize it as bad for something it isn't trying to be.

(also Vader and "Blind Donnie Yen" are awesome)

It'd be another thing entirely if they spoiled Rogue One a week after it's release. However it's been over 3 weeks since the film released. The domestic box office is $477,364,924 and globally it's made $914,464,924. I think it's safe to say a VAST majority of the public has seen it. And if not, people shouldn't berate those who wish to speak openly about the film.

I'm gonna sound like a Trump supporter talking about "political correctness" but spoiler culture has really gotten out of hand. If you're watching a discussion about ANYTHING there will be spoilers and that's just common sense. I started watching the first episode of this show, but I haven't seen Deadpool. When I heard more than I wanted or didn't quite understand the conversation, I backed out and I'll watch it after I have a chance to see Deadpool. That's not a radical idea.

Definitely support the Alan Tudyk love; he's still my preferred choice for Hank Pym if they ever deage him/do flashback stories about him and Wasp in the MCU (he looks just like him in the comics and would do a great job playing a Marvel Adventures or EMH inspired take on him). Love that man's work to death.

I liked this episode better, there was a wider ray of opinions and thought processes going on this episode than the last one.

    Good Things:

Jon went off-topic to explore other discussion avenues to keep things fresh and engaging.

Much needed self-deprecatitive comic relief from Tyler Coe.

Ashley is really good at chill topic discussion and keeping things moving, I'd like to see more of her on this show.

    Not So Good Things:

I feel like you guys should have chairs to sit in and a low standing table in the center. The show feels really "on edge" with everyone standing and leaning in to the current table.

More jokes would be nice but the conversation to joke ratio is almost balanced in my opinion.

The game portion in this episode detracted from the overall experience so much that I thought the show was going for an "Off The Rails" #OnTheSpot bit.

    Overall:

This episode was an improvement over the last one, but I feel like the scope of the show should include a throwback topic to older movies every few episodes to keep things from getting stale. Keep up the good work. :D

Jon, you look like you are really hard to please when it comes to movies. I (respectfully) disagree with so many things that you said. I will talk about a few. First of all, we don't need comic relief in every MOVIES out there ( we agree on that ). But, you gave the example of Bat V Sup. calling it too dark and ( probably ) not enjoyable. I don't think it needed more than it had ( Alfred ). The movie could've been way better, yes. But, the fact that the movie wasn't full of Tony Stark comments didn't ruin it. Next, Star Wars prequel, we agree on Jar Jar. Although, you ( and Ashley ) said that they failed on the comic relief. I disagree. Obi Wan Kenobi. That is all. Rogue one was a fantastic movie for me. I will agree that we didn't have time to connect to every character. I did however find the time to connect to Cassian ( main rebel dude ) and Bodhi ( the pilot ). Pretty early on, cassian annoyed me enough for me to me waiting in anticipation for him to die. Bodhi, who died during the last battle, actually hurt me because ( even if I knew he was doomed ) I was rooting for him. His talk with Jyn ( Yes, that is the main character ) were great. On another note, thank you Jon for not spoiling the ( recent ) movies ( especially Fantastic beast ) you talked about. LOOKING AT YOU TYLER

I think this dark SW movie was absolutely necessary. SW originally was very much a cold war movie, a small band of brave freedom fighters against a empire of bad guys. Back in the day you didn’t need to explain what a weapon of mass destruction meant, people were socialized in that climate – by episode VII the Death Star itself became a bit of a running gag. This movie showed from up close what the Death Star and the Empire and Vader could do, that their threat was very real.

Also, back in the old SW movie times (again, partially because it was also cold war times) the narrative was clear: there were bad guys and there were good guys who would eventually win, which allowed for a more adventurous, funnier tone. I feel RO did a good job on actualizing the message and the social commentary. The good guys have not always been good and are not always doing good things. These people are serious and ’joyless’ because they have seen some shit and done some shit, they’re not wide-eyed innocent kids who got mixed up into an adventure, they are war veterans.

That being said, K2 was absolutely necessary. Humor is not only for the audience to catch a break, but it is also a way to show the characters’ humanity. I actually felt like other characters (like Chirrut&Wen especially) also had their moments, maybe not actual laugh-out-loud kind of jokes, but indications that these guys aren’t all sour all the time either, they just have shit to do and have no time for giggles. + it wasn’t only that the audience had a very short amount of time to get to know the characters, but the characters didn’t get much time to get close to each other either, which again made it difficult to have that much chemistry.

I really don't want to sound negative at all, but I wish you guys had chairs to sit and chill. It could be just nerves or unfamiliarity with the format, but it comes across as very artificial and like scripty..like less of a natural discussion?..if that makes sense...like I feel an overwhelming need to just say BREATHE for a second

It slowly starts to get better later on, but the current set up of the set doesn't necessarily encourage comfortable discussion...?

I don't usually comment, but since this is in a trial phase I thought feedback might help.

Great job on experimenting with the new show! I'll be looking forward to the next episodes. Of course, it's your show so feel free to ignore this if it comes across as too nitpicky!

I rewatched Rogue One after seeing this video and I'd never consciously realised how comic relief was used but when I knew to look for it it was really interesting! The comic relief comes at the best moments, it never kills an emotional scene but helps pull you out of it! Throwing this out there-the reason I felt Rogue One wasn't as gritty as people made it out to be was probably because half-way through my dad leaned over to tell me he'd gotten an alert saying Carrie Fisher had died. Couldn't focus on the last half of the fucking movie. :T

Alan Tudyk is one of my all time favourite actors. He does amazing comedy roles with everything from Firefly to the dumb chicken in Moana. But he's also great in more serious roles like the other amazing robot he plays as Sonny in 'I, Robot', a character that is straight and serious but you connect with a lot. Also, if you haven't seen Dollhouse, you definitely should as his character in that is brilliant and becomes one of the most chilling and terrifying villains out of nowhere. Makes me want to see him as a villain more often.

@Jon if you do just be aware season 2 is... weird, and not in a good way. You'll think you're watching the wrong show for the first 10 minutes. I think they knew the show was only gonna get one more season so they crammed like 5 seasons of complicated plot into 13 episodes and it gets quite muddled. However season 1 is brilliant and I still enjoyed season 2 after the initial shock, so it's definitely worth checking out imo  ok_hand

So I was gonna see Rogue One tomorrow. That out of the blue Spoiler, RIP me lol. Another really enjoyable episode though, despite once again not having seen the main film in question -- I love the relaxed attitude of the setup. Maybe buy some chairs, though.

Bro, internet rules apply. If you haven't seen the movie and the movie is out, don't watch videos about the movie. Sorry for spoilers. Thanks for watching.
