i dont know if it counts as a pet peeve, but breaking a promise. "oh i promise i'll be there" or "i promise i wont do it again"

It stems from something very specific in my life, but I cannot stand when people break a promise. Thats not to say i'm not understanding when things unexpected or out of your control happen. Like take the first promise for example. when someone's anxiety acts up and they cant leave the house or they get food poisoning or your water breaks or something i'll forgive it and wont hold it against them. but if they knew that their job might get in the way or if they just "forgot"..... ugh it makes me so pissed. And i hold myself to those same standards. like even something as small as being asked "promise me you wont repeat this to anyone" before i know whats going to be said... i cant even do that. i dont know what you're about to tell me and i cant bring myself to promise something like that when for all i know you're about to tell me your plans to end your life or someone elses. I know that may seem out there but it can happen and i cant bring myself to risk that. So when people break a promise as simple as not telling your friends crush that they like them, i get really frustrated. it does sound a bit irrational but it's just something important to me.

Yeah I also don't like the "get it," at least without elaboration. If you elaborate then sure, at least you're trying to make a point. But if you start and end your argument with "you just don't get it" then you aren't helping, you're just being a prick who is basically defining what is correct by whether they are being agreed with.

(Sorry about the tense switch there Becca but I'm tired).

My big one, though, is for all intents and purposes a specific form of gaslighting when you say something and clearly outline your motivation for your actions and words but someone will then basically say "well, no, your motivation is this." Saying that they know your brain and intent better than you do. Fucking burns me up.

I never realized pet peeves could get so deep.

Also it took me a lot of studying, patience, practice and interest to stop judging bad grammar. Initially, as a language enthusiast I would correct most of the mistakes I saw and would be mortified whenever I made an error. Yet, the more I read and the more research I did (mainly because of my career) I became aware of how privileged I was. It was an eye-opening experience, which allowed me to use language in order to see the world better.

    love you Lindsay!

I totally agree 'that has not been my experience but I'm interested to know what has informed that view..' is such a healthy way to explore ideas. And also, not being too quick to say anything at all is important, like Burnie does with his 'go on' to Gavin when Gavin has started talking mid sentence because he's already said three things in his head and then just starts talking mid conversation!

There. A place not here. For example, "Tony is standing over there."

They're. Combination for the words They are. For example, "They're standing over there."

Their. The correcting spelling of the word you wanted to use. "...talk about their privileges..."

It's not a translation thing. The Premier League is the English football league. Also "Premier" is a french word in the first place so you adding an "e" and an accent is just utter nonsense.

As a lifeguard, it kills me when parents bring their kids to the beach and then just "abandon" them. While I'm all for allowing kids to explore and learn things on their own, as a parent you should always keep an eye on your kid, especially when they can't swim. The worst is when parents put their two or three year old in the water with just a life-vest, walk away and sit on their phone tanning and not paying any attention. Firstly, it is dangerous to the children and adds stress to my job, but more frustratingly, these kids are often the type to run around rudely splashing strangers or to take off their vest and try to go deeper than they can stand, and the parent, either by choice or pure inattention, doesn't bother to discipline the child and get them out of stranger's faces.

OK, that felt nice. Thanks for letting me vent!

the whole 'seeing things from other peoples perspectives instead of just dismissing them as dumb' conversation is pretty funny to me after various rt people have said on various podcasts that people who voted trump are insane and "are ok with racism".

    • BABBS FIRST Member Star(s) Indication of membership status - One star is a FIRST member, two stars is Double Gold

I really don't mind rt people expressing political opinions, what drives me nuts is the level of contempt that sometimes gets expressed.  I'm so tired of hearing from people, here or elsewhere, who seem to believe that everyone who doesn't live in a large liberal city is a racist piece of shit worth nothing but scorn and low-level hatred.

    • CJDragonXI FIRST Member Star(s) Indication of membership status - One star is a FIRST member, two stars is Double Gold

But there's no 'other peoples perspective' in that regard because no one at RT (as far as the podcasts I've watched) likes Trump so there is no differing opinion during those conversations.

    • CitizenSnips00 FIRST Member Star(s) Indication of membership status - One star is a FIRST member, two stars is Double Gold Mr

I think that is why a lot of people dislike when RT talk about politics, as it is just an echo chamber of the same opinion. People that have a different opinion don't feel represented and others just want to hear both sides. Not to mention the constant name calling of, if you have this opinion you must be racist or xenophobic etc. I feel like if someone in RT did vote for Trump (which someone must have) they would be afraid to come out with that, over fear of a backlash from inside the company.

Biggest pet peeve, "I could care less". Then you care any amount from an infinitely small amount to an infinitely large amount. That is in fact the exact opposite of what they mean.

Second biggest pet peeve, when people say things are infringing on our democracy. Fun fact: America is a constitutional republic, we don't HAVE democracy to infringe on.

    • Jaquob FIRST Member Star(s) Indication of membership status - One star is a FIRST member, two stars is Double Gold

While it's true we do not have a democracy, our republic has become more democratic over the centuries. After the American Revolution, the people had far too much liberty and were rather violent. This was one of the reasons the framers set up a republic, to give the people "republican iron cages" and ensure that America would not devolve into anarchy. Still concerned that tyrants could come into power like Fat George, we were given "a republic, if [we] can keep it", as Benjamin Franklin said after the constitution was ratified. We as citizens have a civic virtue, to uphold our republic and ensure our leaders follow the will of the people. The will of the people has become a larger influence as we have progressed. The Electoral College, which was designed to vote independent of the people if necessary, is now dependent on the people's choice. Senators are now elected directly by the people. As communication technology has progressed, elected officials value the will of the people more than their own judgement in order to be re-elected.

A true democracy is not feasible with a population of over 300 million. I would argue that a democratic republic is the closest a government can get to a democracy and still be functional. Of course, the democratic nature of our republic is defined by the user. The more outspoken and politically active one is (greater civic virtue), the more democratic the process will be.

Oh, and I completely agree - "I could care less" drives me nuts.

I always got stuck babysitting the kids at family gatherings since I was the oldest person around that wasn't old enough to be around the adults. That would be fine on its own, the problem is most of my relatives are shitty parents, in addition to the fact that most of them have enough money to live fairly lavish lives which made the kids spoiled pieces of shit. Because of this I usually ended up disciplining the children when they acted like brats, which led to them getting their feelings hurt because no one ever yells at them, which led to me getting yelled at for what they think is me being a jerk but is really me doing their job.

As funny as the joke is, I would like to point out that misspelled words do not automatically count as grammatical errors. The grammer itself has to actually be faulty.

As it is, your question still makes grammatical sense, even if it isn't pretty to look at.

But I still gave you the +1 because it made me laugh. :D

I have two ways of writing messages:

    1. Absolutely grammatically correct, never missing apostrophes or other punctuation marks or anything like that.

    2. Utterly shitty grammar, and using abbreviations wherever possible (like "r u even tryin bruh" or "wat is dis lol").

I've got to say, I'm such a grammar nazi. I can't stand "typos", and grammar mistakes, but for some reason, I have that one friend (and only her) where I'll ignore all of that and write like the people I hate so very much.
I think I'm fine with that because I know that what I'm writing is wrong and I do know what it shouldsay, and so does she.

But yeah, grammar exists for a reason, kids.

one of the things that really nobs me off about internet arguments, especially those politically inclined, is that in recent years it's been all about winning. person gets mad? you've won! person doesn't respond? you've won! person doesn't understand? you've won! congratulations, You Are The Best At Internet Arguments, have some points and pet your ego!

it's about being right all the time and winning arbitrary internet points for whatever reason, instead of learning and talking things out and really getting to the nitty gritty of things and hey, yeah, you may be wrong, or you may learn something new that changes your outlook on things but that's just life, and if you can learn from that or become a better person 'cause of it, that really shows who you are as a human

(plus I have a lot to say about politics being about getting a goal and then winning and crushing your foes rather than the constant progression and change of humanity and deciding where as humans we should go from this point onward but that's a whole another kettle of fish)

like... maybe it's just me, but I kinda wanna be proven wrong? and I'm not going to be proven wrong or learn anything by being called a soft-hearted dirty leftist who's too weak for the world but you know (shrug emoji)

either way, another great post-show, I've always enjoyed Still Open!
