I'm 29 and I feel exactly like the Junior in High School. I've gone to college and got the degree w/out success at a job. I'm the one burdened by lots of debt. My advice would be to just experience life. Colleges will be there once you've found yourself.

Not going to university also comes with a stigma that you need to overcome. I'm a game developer and didn't go to uni. The assumption when I tell people that I didn't go to uni is that I'm a washout and have nothing going for me. It's not so bad with younger people, but when meeting friends' parents etc. they assume that I'm not very bright and then give me a talk about "don't throw away your life" etc. Also, can we get more Jessy and Nick please?

I was sleeping at a hotel. I had a dream where I repeatedly woke up in the hotel room and checking the time. Every time I woke up, the clock read 11am to 1pm, meaning that I miss the continental breakfast and don't get to eat food.

I woke up in reality scared I'd actually miss breakfast, but I checked the time and it was 7am. I was fine..

I'm a pretty lucid dreamer (props to a life of video games), so those cool dreams where you get powers or can fly are usually pretty fun. But usually for me it's kinda difficult to fly continuously and whatever. I rarely have nightmares; when I was pretty young I would have a recurring 'nightmare' where I would be in my bed and my bedroom door would be open. Then I'd hear this old timey rollerskate (those metal ones) slowly rolling along the wooden floor to come kill me. No idea why it was a rollerskate and why it was hungry for my blood, though. I also have pretty regular deja vu moments from dreams, which is always cool.

As for Jocelyn....for me it has been university for the past three years, and I went straight from high school to uni. I am a terrible student in terms of motivation, effort and studying. I have always been able to get by with minimum effort; but it doesn't work that way in uni. I regret going and I regret my actions because I might not be able to graduate if I don't pass the exams I just took. It's a terrible feeling. It's not the place for doing 'just enough'. It's a waste of money (in Australia it's not as big a deal; we don't have to pay for it upfront) and also a waste of time if you aren't committed. Especially if you're really not sure you're going to enjoy what you're doing and not sure it's for you. Take the time to make a choice. It's going to be dependent of the type of person you are. I'm an introvert and a recluse most of the time; I've not made friends that I see after I finished the classes I took with them, never went to events or clubs and I never stuck around at campus long enough other than to go to classes. All I learned about myself is that I'm 21, not qualified and won't be qualified for anything, unemployed, driver's license-less and just as lost and confused as I was in year 12 when school said "choose something you want to be for the rest of your life". It's frankly quite ridiculous and I don't think it's abnormal at all to feel that way at that age. You might find more about yourself in the coming years that will help you choose what to do. And remember you can always change things and you are in charge of your future!

I'm a lucid dreamer too! I can actually switch characters, stop time, replay situation, and all that type of stuff (also a gamer so sometimes I make up games in my dreams). I was reading somewhere that natural lucid dreamers who don't actively practice lucid dreaming, they just can lucid dream; they tend to be children who had a lot of nightmares or reoccurring nightmares. It's kind of the brain's defense mechanism and lucid dreaming brings back control. I used to only have nightmares as a kid, I think my child self would consider my dreams now nightmares but I just think they're fun. Your lucid dreaming is probably more tied to your reoccurring nightmare than your video gaming life.

After i finished high school i tried college because i had the chance.

But college costs in the US are quite high... Here in Belgium it's like 400-500 euro for a whole year, so for me it was a no brainer cause you can try different things see what you like... I feel the cost of going to college in the US scares a lot of people and put's way to much pressure on young people.

Community College in the states is more like that. I paid about $30-45 per class, and most classes counted as credits for any UC and Cal State school ( four year schools in california). I mean that includes huge schools, like Berkely, Irvine, LA, Cal Polys, ect. It's the private colleges that are truly killer in the states, those Ivy league schools are disastrous on debt.

I had a dream last night about RWBY. Volume 4, Chapter 1 was already out, with Chapter 2 coming on the 21st for First Members, and I woke up thinking that Chapter 1 was coming out today. When I watched the show, I realized that the setting and theme of the show had completely changed from futuro-fantasy to gothic and everything felt wrong. Also, in the dream, Rooster Teeth didn't have enough money to hire Elizabeth Maxwell to do the voice of Winter anymore, so she was voiced by some deep-voiced man doing a high-pitched voice.

I actually had to take one year because I had an accident but there's nothing wrong with taking some time to figure what you really want to do.

Hmm it's happens to me like Barbara that while I do dreaming, I don't remember what I dreamed...sadly.

My first crush was a transfer student in my class, in middle school, we kinda had same hobbies and wasn't bad looking, I don't know who told him about it but he declined because he considered I was childish and he wasn't interested in a relationship. I felt very bad at the moment but I also could understand his reasons so I got over it fast.

I finish my final exams in under less then a week (I live in Australia), I am planning on taking a gap year before going to University. Mostly because I am quite young but also because I want to have a year to explore the world, gain some real life experience before heading off to uni and gaining $50 000 of debt. Jocelyn, if you read this, I recommend not stressing about what you are doing, I have no idea myself, even after two years of relatives asking what I am going to do. When applying for uni, I put in a variety of courses I am interested in and am going to work from there. Not sure how that system works in America but in Australia, at most uni's you can defer for a year before going to uni. It is a really popular option and a lot of young people have gap years where they travel, go to concerts, work a part time job. There are so many options straight out of high school. You can do exchanges to other countries or find work within your local community that can be useful for your resume. A year off can do you a world of good before you head off to university and start studying again. Like in Barb, Chris, Nick and Jess said, don't be lazy during this year off, either, make sure you have somethings to occupy yourself with.

I just finished my final exams for my undergraduate degree (also Australian). Gotta say, after 3 years of uni straight outta high school I regret almost every second of it. I have a debt (that I'll probably never have to pay off fortunately); worries that I'm actually not going to pass and will have to endure more study; am not really qualified to do anything; can't actually do any normal stuff a 21 year old should (no license and never been employed). Being in education for 16 years straight (or almost consecutively) is definitely not for everyone and I really think that if you enjoy a gap year you might find that going back into study is going to be frustrating. One word of advice; don't ever stay if you aren't enjoying yourself. I took a psychology course because I loved it and wanted to help people, except now it's the opposite. I'm really quite a lazy person and uni is not the place for lazy people. I'm not trying to say it's all bad, but, you need to pay attention to your own needs and feelings - make sure you're happy!

Speaking of dreams, I had the stupidest dream the other day. Barbara ended up staying at my house, on the way to the London Con (which I can't go to), so all I wanted was to take a pic and ask for an Autograph only I was too nervous and shy to speak to her.

Which is extra embarrassing cos I'm a grown ass man and married, so really speaking to a girl should be something I can manage. I think my subconscious hates me.

For Jocelyn, if you're reading this:
Definitely take a year or two off if you want. I highly encourage you to try and get seasonal jobs away from home. It can be very scary living alone but this will help you not get stuck in the rut of work. Plus, you might learn more about yourself! If you're not sure what you want to do but still want to expand your knowledge, definitely do what Nick did... go to a cc and pick small courses in different fields. Ask the advisers there,as well as teachers and older students, what they think about career paths. They can be very helpful.

The worst thing you can do is be worried about having to do things right away. It is becoming increasingly common for people to come back to school when they are 21, 22, and I even had a classmate who was 24 trying to get a bachelor's to go to medical school. Having that life experience can be very helpful in applying to schools, especially if you're not sure what you want to do.

Take time to learn about yourself, learn about YOUR interests, YOUR dreams, and YOUR passions. Because end of the day, YOU are living YOUR life and need to what YOU want because you're the one stuck with your decisions. Wishing you the best!

Coming from someone who's trying to get into medical school and enjoying the fact he didn't get in the first time he applied.

P.S. Nick went to USC? FIGHT THE FUCK ONNNNNN

When it comes to University, I didn't chose what I wanted to do until around August of Year 12 and I finished in October. My original plan wasn't to even go to University, so I applied for one and somehow got in under a foundation year program (end of exam mark wasn't enough).

So, I spent the next year and a half at one university and then after hating it I switched to my current University still studying film production. I've gone from someone who didn't know what they wanted to do to someone about to graduate with a bachelors degree in film and also got to travel to L.A. last month thanks to the course too.

I'd say don't stress, high school isn't the end of the world, it can take time to truly discover what it is you want to do and if American schooling is anything like Australia, your final marks don't determine the kind of person you are.

After high school I had to take two years off before going to college because I wasn't ready yet. Well, I still wasn't ready when I enrolled. I didn't even know what I wanted to do so I went in for a general business program. Unfortunately I had to withdraw in my last semester because of health issues. [and they changed the program right after that so I would have to go back for an extra semester too..] It's been two years since I had to withdraw, but I hope to go back next September for an environmental program which is something I think I will like. <3 Long story short; life happens in it's own time and sometimes it just likes to hit the pause button. Don't give up on yourself and you'll get there eventually.

Oh gosh, here comes the storm.

I really love Always Open, I think the relatively young ages of the cast and the intimate setting allow for truly intimate and transparent discussions. But this episode seemed a little...off? A lot of that, for me, had to do with the pacing. Jessy is very measured and slow to speak, which is much different from the type of cast we usually have on the show. Frankly, it was too slow. I'm from the the camp of Achievement Hunter where I love the whole, yelling over each other, super fast paced thing. It's a personal preference and since this is still such a new show (and one I'm really enjoying, so far) I thought I'd contribute.

It's such a difficult thing because college really does work for some people but sometimes it doesn't work but that's okay too. There's a stigma that if you drop out of college or fail out or whatever that you're just a failure in general but you can also get a lot of experience and find your path by being out of college too. I honestly, wish someone would have told me that it's okay to not go to college especially if you have no idea what you want to do in life. I was definitely one of those people and still am one of those people who have no idea what to do in life. But I went to college anyways because I thought it's what you're supposed to do. I'm now taking a semester off(and also cause I might have failed out cause nothing was working and other personal life things and I also lost my financial aid but I digress) and I'm saddled with debt and really nothing to show for the fact that I went to college for about 4 years.

Either way, I think if you're unsure what to do in life. Do apprenticeship or internship. You won't get paid I think for them but you will get experience and will be networking as well and maybe you will find what you like to do. Then you go from there and go to college if what you like to do requires a degree and such.

I have to agree with you, there does seem to be this idea the college or university is the be all end all when really there are many other career paths to explore. I personally chose a career in the trades specifically as a machinist and I can honestly say I have no regrets, I enjoy what I do and I find it fun, challenging and most of all interesting what more can you ask for. There is also this idea that the trades are only for stupid people and let me tell you that is most certainly not the case, I like the raise the point of would you want an idiot fixing the brakes on your car or one installing the furnace in your home probably not. Sure the bar for entry may be lower than that for university but that doesn't mean you can't have a rewarding and fulfilling career. There's also the added bonus of being an apprentice in the trades (at least in Canada) where you make money while your learning the job. That being said my advice is while your still in high school is do some research, look at your skills, look at what you enjoy doing and start your search there but don't let that limit you and don't limit yourself to that. If your local vocational college or trade school has an open house go and check it out even if you don't think you would find anything interesting you may be surprised or if you do find nothing then at least you know.

Jocelyn!  I was the oddity that went to community college right after spending four years at a state school.  If you want to go to school go to community college first.  I found the community better and the variety of people that I met there was great.  I have been out of college for 10 years now and I don't use my degrees directly anymore.  It's just in the last four years that i've fallen into something that's a career and it's not something I went to school with AND not something that I want to do with the rest of my life it just works for now.  You don't have to know what you're going to do with the rest of your life.  I thought I did at your age and things change.

Also, for a different perspective, I didn't really keep in touch with anyone from college.  I might get to see them every now and then but it's not what I went to school for.

When comes to advice for college and what to when finishing high school I always flash back to an article that was published back when I graduated.  It has generally become known as the 'Wear Sunscreen' speech.  It has been repeated through out the years since then but I think the core message is incredibly valuable.  Basically, don't be afraid to be yourself, find your own path and try not to worry about things too much as in a few years, they might not even seem relevant.

My advice for college: be someone else. If the you of high school becomes the you of college, you won't grow. That's what happened to me. I didn't go out. I didn't gain social skills. So here I sit alone in my home, single for longer than is smart but too scared to go out because of my lack of social ability. Homestuck is a terrible thing and it is really hard to overcome.

College is an experince. It sucks and its good. It truly only is terrible if you dont go out and do anything. So if you go, go out and do stuff while at college and find where you fit in and talk to teachers to see what you actually want to do in college. You can take a year for commons class and then declare after you freshman or sophmore year. Go have fun and enjoy the time!

Like the RT podcast is more techy and world news. Off Topic is pretty much drunk guys shooting the shit and talking about the funny stuff that happened in the office. The Patch is more gaming related and Dude Soup is gaming/movie related. Pick your show. No need to complain about how the Simpsons is so much better than Family Guy because everything is so stale.

I wish I'd gotten that advice about college/university before I did exactly what they advised against - get into a bunch of debt before realising you don't want to do that thing.

I got into a bunch of debt getting my masters in something I love.  But I seem to have educated myself out of the entry levels jobs that I need to get into the field.  That's not a problem I even thought might be a thing.

Uh wow. Relating to Barbaras bird nightmare, my first nightmare was ALSO about birds taking over my elementary school. Except in my dream they where penguins...and they shot lasers out of their eyes...so yeah
